Yes, but there are many people in second life who can't. There are many disabled and housebound people in this game, or others who are unable to form relationships. IMO to make a comment like yours could be mistaken for insensitive smugness, and I'm sure that's not what you intended to convey.

Excellent point, Selador. It is something that has always struck me about Zoey's EWW avatar sex posts. There are a wide variety of people in SL, and it is certainly Zoey's place to not like avatar sex (I'm not into it myself either). To each his or her own. However, the threads usually devolve into Zoey or someone else mocking those who do enjoy it as losers who can't get laid in RL, and that is horribly insensitive and borders on just plain cruel. While the Internet can become a barrier to real life intimacy and create a whole host of sexual issues, for many people it is their only outlet, and no one has a right to degrade that. I think you are right that Mina was not conveying that, simply wondering why one would take part if RL sex is available, which is a valid question but only part of the issue. Zoey on the other hand has posted thread after thread like this, and her intent is clear.

Online sex - be it avatar, cyber, webcam, etc... can become an addiction, and can get in the way of RL intimacy and relationships, especially when it is used to fill a void in RL. It is hard for RL to live up to the fantasy that can be created online. Saying it is bad for mental health is a blanket statement, but it can affect some people negatively.

It is a matter of personal preference with certain individual truths -- after all, even with actual physical sexual intercourse, not everyone is into certain positions or styles or whatnot. Sex is said to be an ultimate form of self-expression, and as such, it is expressed in a unique way from each person.

Being autistic, I am sensitive to the needs of those who have great difficulty finding an outlet IRL, not only with sex, but with social communication and other avenues that can be explored through Second Life. As long as addiction or vicious cycles don't take hold, as you pointed out, I encourage exploration of these avenues. They hold much promise.


P.S. one reason I came to SL was because of Fran & Launa's Hug attachment. My basic logical reasoning came down to the following: there are lots of games where you can kill people, but how many pieces of interactive entertainment are there where you can reach out and give a friend a big, warm hug... really?

Well, I get sex on a regular basis in RL because my husband and I are very much in love (even after 10 years), and very happy (even though of course we have our bad times). Though we often have to make "dates" because of our almost 6 year old. She is Autistic/Hyperlectic. But we have a very active sex life and I am happy with it.

That said. I am also a bisexual and my husband is open to me having a female partner and or a female partner for us to share. We have a lot of rules and checks and balances in place for both of us though. And due to our RL responsibilities and constraints, it is not always possible for us to get out and mingle.

So I am open to online fun and experiments with females in the online worlds that I have been in. Now going to a shop or location and just randomly testing out the "sex" balls with anyone available is to me just goofing off testing the animations of the world. Not a darn thing is meant by it. And there are just a handful of gals I would want to have fun with and actually have Av sex with (I actually prefer cyber, but that is only because the words can just say so much more). Anyway, everything I do is known by my hubby, and I wouldn't do anything that would go against his wishes or our agreement.

That said. Av sex is just a fun goofing off thing for me. And I've done it twice in my over year in SL and it was with the same person. Some take it very seriously and I think that is fine too. No harm no foul. Though picutures are always appretiated.
