Muting equals disrespect?

I am part of a pretty small community in a private sim. Me and my friends have been there for about a couple of months. Recently, there was an argument going on, and I was becoming enraged. So, I muted a PARTIAL sim-owner (note: this person does not own the sim, but he/she CLAIMS that he/she helps pay for it, and I do believe him/her), in an attempt to keep things under control. I notified him/her that I muted him/her in an IM, since he/she continued to instant message me. The person whom I muted began to abuse me with kick/push scripts, and the other land owner justified this by claiming that I "disrespected" the first person by muting him/her. Now, I pose you a question that I am honestly curious about, and that I want an honest answer to. Do you all believe that muting someone is a sign of disrespect?

My opinion: I believe that muting someone is a sign of trying to prevent worse situations from occuring. I see no disrespect.

If they're going to be childish by throwing you around with push scripts, I'd look into getting a new group of friends.

I don't thnik it's disrespect ... If you don't want to listen to them, they have to deal with it. But, being muted shouldn't be something to provoke you to abuse someone. That's the bad part ... many people take it personally.

It could be disrespect if one was involved in a petty, scatty "talk to the hand" situation. As in, "I'll blast my mouth off at you and then shut you up."

But, from what you have said, Dan, what you were involved was not civil at all. Retaliation for muting with push scripts is childish in a bad way, and certainly abuse. If you muted because you did not want to become further enraged, especially if this other person was trying to "get your goat" and goad you on, then I agree with your decision.

I'll stand by Dan in his right to mute anyone, even in a Linden. Then I'll turn right around and stand by anyone else's right to kick/ban/teleport him home. If you own a private sim, there's no reason why a co-owner should not have access to an object that will do this when needed.

I agree with anyone's right to mute anyone else, no questions asked or answered.
Note....I don't think it is possible (nor should it be possible) to mure a Linden, however.

That said, land owners, much less sim owners, have the right to eject people from their land for whatever reason no questions asked or answered.

Rude? Who cares? It's a perpsective-driven thing whether or not anyone thinks it's rude.
Acceptable? Certainly.
Wrong thing to do to the land owner? Absolutely.
Wrong thing to do to someone claiming to be a partial owner? Absoltuely.

Silly to bring this to the forums? Absolutely. If you have to ask other people about whether your behavior is/was acceptable, you already have your own answer - why ask others?

Feniks has forgotten the fact that Taylor was targetting me as a scapegoat, and did not mention one word to the other people in the debate. I was personally attacked many times, but that is NEVER mentioned, all that is talked about here is how I personally attack people. The reason I muted Taylor was because she continued to IM me after someone ended the debate and I didn't really want to HEAR SOMEONE right in my left ear, yelling at me, succeeding a very malicious political debate. I found that muting was the right decision in my view or else I would have gotten more out of control with Taylor.

This justifies a LAND-OWNER using silly scripts on me to try and push me out of the way when I am having a civil conversation with someone else? You weren't even THERE when I "verbally attacked", someone, so I don't know how you can make a case like such.


Edit: Feniks, I didn't spin ANYTHING about Taylor not being a co-owner of the sim. I even stated that I believed she was the co-owner. Maybe you can stop putting my words in my mouth and then YOUR story won't have a "spin" on it?

Edit again: Another lie in Feniks' post. I never IM'ed Feniks and told her that I muted Taylor, as if to sound conceited. Feniks ASKED me why I muted her.

Edit a third time: I muted Taylor AFTER the debate/argument was over. So, saying that I muted her so that I could continue arguing is just another hole in your story, Feniks.

Apparently you have disreguarded the many posts that prove I am an established scripter.... Perhaps you should ask any of my former-customers if I was so bad at scripting that I needed to copy things? This point is stupid, and you bring it up in every thread I post to try and degrade me. First of all, I didn't copy a script. Second of all, I didn't copy a BUILD. I sold a build that someone else had copied. Maybe you should go look for any posts that Pyotr Czukor has made, and berate him in them. Just give up with this crap, because nobody else on these forums really cares about that issue anymore (from what I can see)

When you're in a Linden, you can't do anything....you have to wait til you're outside them again.

Where else is there when anger and injustice are burning into your brain (usually in BOTH parties) ?

Other peoples calm views from outside the situation can help, as can the opportunity to have your say.

Maybe I have this wrong but it seems to me that the significant points are where this happened, and what options there were.

Dan should never got himself into a situation where push scripts were used against him with the explicit approval of the landowner in a private sim. When asked to, his avatar should have left the area - a sensible thing to do in any case. The desire to stay and keep arguing (albeit with someone else) should have been resisted. Dan in this was wrong.

If, after he had left the area, he was repeatedly pursued by IM's , he had every right to mute them, provided of course he had fallen silent about the whole incident himself. In this he was right.

Unless of course this muting happened while his avatar was still ignoring requests to leave. First LEAVE - THEN mute.

Fascinating the messes our emotions can get us into - in SL just as in RL.

And it has to be admitted that some personalities are more abrasive than others. If two such meet ....ah.

No chalky- I wasn't banned from the sim when someone was using push scripts against me. After the debate was over, I was talking to a friend and someone used the push scripts against me, not in attempt to rid me of the sim, but just to annoy me. It wasn't until 10 minutes after that. The land-owner never made an attempt to remove me from the sim that day. Sorry but what you think what happened isn't what happened. I was NEVER asked to leave the sim, until way after the debate occured. I NEVER made any attempt to come back for the sake of arguing from when people pushed me with scripts. Like I said, I was having a civil conversation with a friend when the push scripts were being used against me.

I give up then. I obviously misunderstood completely.

An interesting demonstration, Dan, for you and for me, of how nearly impossible it is either clearly to explain, or clearly to understand, such an event - just from forum postings about it.

Maybe we need an in-game team of live "conflict-resolution" volunteers who could be summoned by IM to come and sort such things out. With a reporting channel to the Lindens to give them a little authority.

But perhaps they would be unable to avoid misunderstanding too?
Ah well......

Conflict resolution is on the list of things Live Help can do. But they are rarely asked to perform it.

Hmmmm so if Muting = Disrespect...what does bugging the shit out of someone if they are set to Busy mean?
