It seems that some people value their post count (Eggy, I'm looking at you :P ) which in ways does express interest and commitment to SL.

If you are going to archive threads and whatnot, wouldn't it be a simple matter to just leave people's post counts as they are. I mean, archiving doesn't mean that those posts didn't happen.

One problem with forum archives is unless you had the entire SQL/mySQL backup and a compatible version of the VBulliten board you'd also have to take with the backup the member accounts including passwords, e-mail addresses, and other information contained within the accounts.

And the mySQL backups are in plain text output for all to see. So that would be a rather severe security issue should someone manage to decode an MD5 password hash and log in as say Phillip Linden. Once during an FTP security breach I was able to download mySQL backups of a forum I'm a member of who offered FTP downloads and kept their mySQL backups one directory level up from the FTP download directory. (Took them 3 days to be convinced there was a security issue there.)

I'm no security expert, but while I manage my own forums you begin to learn a few things about the workings of the forum's code, structure, and security. And handing out backups of the database with the old posts is not a good idea.

Right and 50 years from now when people read the archives of our primitive ass, they too will be wondering about those deleted posts.

It shouldn't take a rocket scientist to make a quick script that would dump all posts in the database to a flat text file and gzip it.

OMG! I will be taken less seriously than I already was! POST COUNT IS MY ARMOUR! HOW DARE YOU DELETE MY INEXPLICABLY PARENTAL POSTS! When I have my own house, LOOK OUT BIATCHES! I will use more American colloquialisms while complaining about the effect of American society on the world!

Have you been drinking again, Nolan?
I couldn't care less whether my post count is 3300 or 3800. All I want is to be able to finish documenting SL history at www.profnano.org/sl.
Your post was completely out of line.

Well, any thread that has a post from ME in it should be retained, as these are priceless gems that will someday be worth mucho dinero.

I agree with you, as always Devlin, of all the posts on the Forum it is yours that should be enshrined in a golden frame.

In 50 years, we will all be killed by an AI who constructed his world view from internet forum archives, and calculated from this data set that we would be happier without us. Those deleted posts might be the only thing that saves humankind.

Phew. Glad deleting the 3 word thread saved me. Now that those traces of farm posting gone mad is clean from my hands, I can go on to.. *rubbing hands* take over the world! bwahah*cough* *wheez* shit. forget it.

archival offerings
10-09-2004 10:39
i agree with the idea of offering an archive of all posts on CD or as a downloadable file. there is a wealth of history there, regardless of it's intonation, which would be a great loss were it to be deleted and forgotten.

please, Lindens, do not rob us of our history. i know this is not your goal, but it is an unfortunate side-effect of "cleaning up". we respectfully ask for the consideration of making all archived (else deleted) posts/threads/forums available to SLers in some form or another.

thank you.

Bleh, I think the threads I had in the picture gallery were deleted then. I had pictures of the Prehistoric Event there. And I also had some AV portraits I made of myself. :(

No matter, just have to go to Davo's site to look at them now. And I guess the nudity thing didn't fly over well. :p

The Wayback Machine at:

http://www.archive.org

is a lot of fun. You can actually go back and see what Hotmail was like before Microsoft bought it. Similarly, some sort of archived history for SL as has been mentioned would be great, including the Forum posts here, the Public Library project, the Historical Society progress, and soforth.

Would be funny to have a "time machine" in future SL, or at least a museum where one can go to view primitive primitives and how "things were in the good old days, one year ago". :)
