Crimson is talking about lag, i.e. hiccups and other slowdowns either in communication between viewer and simulator or with the physics engine that runs server-side. I believe that a lot of the recent problems with lag are due to the influx of newbies after the latest CNN/Slashdot/etc articles. What I have noticed is that the lag seems to be localized to groups of simulators - you can get

What I have noticed is that the lag seems to be localized to groups of simulators - you can get lagged when you are within a few sims of a large concentration, even if you're the only avatar within half a kilometer, but the lag is low or nonexistent elsewhere. Since sims that are close to each other are likely to share ports on the same switches, it seems likely to me that they are running into capacity issues with the switches the simulators plug into directly.

Huns, Thanks for your interesting input on this problem. It's really much better to identify the causes of the lag problem rather than denying it exists or blaming member's hardware or ISP or resorting to personal insults.. I agree that sims seem to lag in clusters, such as Mauve, Green and Aqua.

I wonder if the vending machines could be scripted not to be constantly displaying a picture till someone clicks on the machine to see what's in it for sale? Timed to turn off if not in use?

I dont know much of anything about what your talking about :p

But one thing I do know is that if SPAM were eliminated worldwide, the ENTIRE DAMN INTERNET would be much faster.

I remember back in the mid 90s I could surf the web with possibly more ease than I do now with a cable modem. That was with 56k!

Id hate to imagine how much bandwidth is wasted hawking online vicodin and penis patches...
