From: Tupac Wallace Being a heterosexual male, Someone please tell me what da hell guys are doin dressed up as women. Most common reasons I have encountered for Gender bending: They like women, they would rather have an AV that they enjoyed looking at rather than being. Think why so many guys like playing Laura Croft. Social/monitary gain. Some people feel it's just easier to make friends an earm money with a female AV. Gender Dysphoria, a real psychological condition in the DSM-IV where one's body gender does not match up with their identity. SL gives them a momentary escape from a RL that seems painful and wrong to them. Fetishtic thrill in playing the role of a women during a sexual encounter, or paraphillia associated with women's clothing. I would say I know at least one person from each category in SL. How we judge them is our own perogative, but from MY experience in getting to know these people, I found nothing even remotely "sick" or "creepy" (or any other pejorative words you may have) about them. I save my disgust for homophobes.

From: Alby Yellowknife Thats crazy.... Men are gonna become women because they can't find clothing? Puhlezz.. Folks are just sick in the head if they go around living a fantasy of being the other sex and their justification is the lack of clothing.. Yeah, it's sad to use so thin self-justification for that kind of conduct. Come on guys! Be real men and play a female av with conviction and pride! No hiding behind lame excuses.

From: Aimee Weber Most common reasons I have encountered for Gender bending:
...

... This is far more common than you may realize. I don't have the figures for female-to-male but here are the numbers for male-to-female: 1 in 2,500 in the U.S. have had genital reassignment surgery. approx. 1 in 300 have significant GID to the level of transsexualism. between 2% and 5% of the population cross-dresses on a regular basis. My personal speculation is that female-to-males are of comparable numbers, but thanks to feminism, there is much less social stigma to women wearing "male" clothing and taking on traditionally "male" roles in society. Thus they tend to fly under the radar. That's real life. Now factor in that we only have partial control over the appearance and feel of our bodies. We were not given a choice at birth of which gender we'd like to be. The numbers above apply only to those who feel so strongly about their desires to exercise their femininity that they are willing to ignore social stigma, and the aesthetics of putting a flowing dress onto a frame better suited for a football jersey. Is it really so surprising that, given a choice like we are here, large numbers of people take the chance to be a different gender?

From: Ananda Sandgrain between 2% and 5% of the population cross-dresses on a regular basis. It's up in the 10% in some societies. And the proportion of homosexuals is roughly the same among Xdressers and the rest of the population.
