If you want to get the downsides on a few of the many many hosting companies out there check out:

http://yourhostsucks.com/

Reading through the complaints that many people have had with their own hosting companies might also give you some idea of what to look out for.

I was quite happy with one of the companies mentioned there for about a year and then they self destructed, taking a lot of hard work with it. Don't count on inexpensive hosting companies to back your site up (even if they claim they do).

Here is a tip I picked up form my bad experience: Look for some mention of WHO owns and operates the hosting company. If the "ABOUT US" section is missing, or vague: "We can't disclose our datacenter location for security reasons" then I'd look elsewhere. Of course there is nothing wrong with a knowledgeable admin buying a co-located server and parselling it out at a discount price. I just think the end-user is entitled to know that this is what is going on.

Well, like I said, I just need a provider that's good at sending files at a decent clip (200k/sec or more) for SL's new streaming services.

My web page right now is really simple... a news column, my list of songs, and my email address. :)

But even that would suck, because who would want to listen to a whining wussy toaster? Is he gold plated? If that's the case he should just be melted down into gold ingots. What did you pick LF?

ipowerweb has a few posts in the forum at "yourhostsucks" (although it seems most are in the "might not suck" section), but powweb isn't mentioned there. It could just be because the former is a bigger host, obviously. And message board complaint posts are probably a bad and very unscientific way of judging these companies, so...it's not telling us much. :p Fact is, I'm sure you can find a few people who have had bad experiences with any web host, especially the larger ones just because of sheer numbers.

I'm surprised they don't have a rating or voting system in place there, it would tell us more...maybe.
