Well, lots to respond to here. Here's exactly what I'm doing:

Most multiplayer worlds now use expensive MMOG software. Either the software is expensive (www.bigworldgames.com) or very difficult to develop. There are many, many projects I see springing up now that are persistant worlds made for fun by only a few people. These people really shouldn't need to either buy something like BigWorld, which is in the millions of dollars range, or to develop their own MMO netcode when they really can't take advantage of all of it. What I intend to do is to optimize some FPS netcode just for this task. It'll hold around 30 people or so, and the terrain can be about 200k until it repeats the pattern into infinity.

So, there's the idea. I'm half way there, but with some help from Lordfly (I hope) I'll be able to put together a nice city to demonstrate it all.

As a side-note, Y.T. is a Snow Crash referance, not a Thomas Paine referance.

Here are a couple of links from a 3D-VR system I've been following for a couple of years. Progress has been slow, but they keep plugging away at it. One thing I like is that they have spent a lot of time up-front doing design work rather than just jumping into the code. They are using existing Open Source components where possible, developing for Linux and Windows in parallel, and considering things like 3D viewers in the 2D space as well as the other way around. May be something there you are interested in using, or helping with.
