Hiro,
Linden Lab has always taken action to protect the economy - they have a far clearer picture of it tha any of us do.
granted.

All the talking and hand wringing in the world would not have gotten a consensus on the right thing to do,
Who said anything about a consensus? This isn't about a consensus. It's about fair warning. It's about reaching out and discussing. Even if players disagree, they feel better and more ready regarding changes if they are given time to think and talk them over.

as people will always put their own selfish needs and fears before the good of everyone. That is human nature - you look at how it affects you.
True enough, and I think had sufficient time been given, the community would find out that these changes are to benefit - or - they could have suggested some small modifications to make the changes even better.

They are taking a corrective action they see as necessary, and while we can debate the merits of it, the decision is theirs.
Correction - they are taking action that they
believe will be corrective. Speaking to the community ahead of time will ensure that their final decision will be more likely to be corrective and positive.

You can't lead by committee all the time - had input been asked for on this, there never would have been a consensus on what to cut.
Even a King has advisors, though he alone has the final and sole authority. It doesn't have to be a committee; it's not about giving players a vote, just a voice.

A swift, definitive action was needed here, and one was taken.
Oh COME ON! This is just silly, man!
Swift?
Ratings have been broken for MONTHS.
Events have been abused for MONTHS.
There was nothing swift about this patch except for how it was announced to the community.
Definitive?
Linden Lab said this is one corrective action out of many.
Linden Lab has stated they are still making decisions about future modifications.
There's nothing definitive about it - it's a work in progress, a steering of a ship.

The impact remains to be seen. Given that more severe changes have had significant positive impact, I think all the gloom and doom about this is very misplaced.
People say doom and gloomers are bad until disaster happens. I'm sure in There, people complained about changes, and were laughed off. Before September 11, "doomsayers" could have been listened to and thousands of lives saved.
This is a copout argument.
It's like, I check my side-view mirrors before I change lanes on the highway. Sure, 29 times out of 30, I won't need to. But that 30th time, hey, it was a close call, and had I not checked, I'd be in a car accident.
People take precautions for a reason, Cristiano, and there's no reason to put people down for this. Especially when Linden Lab promised to give more time than 48 hours to test out and discuss patches - we're just asking for what was promised.
