It may surprise some people, but I voted YES. However it is one "YES" with many many many "IF". One "IF" saying that there should always be some spaces outside control of any government, like some wild west territory where people can live with maximum freedom at cost of minimum of protection.

I voted "yes" strictly for the right for people to form their own government. But this is kind of a gray issue, and I might not necessarily agree to be part of said government.

It'll be like Firefly, Anshe! We'll have the core planets with a ton of authoritarian garbage and uber-technology, and then we'll have the border planets which are poor, but free. Now I've got to sew myself a Browncoat and build Serenity. Shiny!

Government means power.

Power means abuse.

Abuse means people get screwed.

People getting screwed brings revolution.

Revolution brings new government.

Why bother having a government? Seriously, there's nothing to govern.

Rather, let's work with Linden Lab to make SL a place where everyone has an equal say in how future development works. That's more important than figuring out districting and vote systems.

I voted 'No' because it was too vague. What kind of government are we talking about? How far would its reach be?

Single government? No. Sectors that are self governed, yes.

Well it seems LL is planning on self-governance.

But I don't think this means "rule," or "power."

I think it means systems like Live Help... maybe a system in the future where players can develop a dispute resolution system of their own instead of whining to poppy linden that tommy took their teddy.

Which could work.

I think anarchy has the best potential for organization... certainly self-government doesn't have to mean some central party gets to spew out a bunch of rules and regulations.

so lets get off the short-sighted democracy train and start putting our heads together on a dispute resolution system that uses a decentralized body of arbitors. :D

I think a very detailed explanation of exactly what LL means with respect to this issue is in order. Please LL, tell us exactly what you mean. The community is nearly tearing itself apart here because there are so many assumptions and rumours. If you truly want these boards to be more civil you should make it crystal clear for us.

I will not be governed by other players. This is one I would definitely walk over.

I voted No because I pay to play. No one who doesn't pay my SL bill or work directly for LL is going to tell me what I can and cannot do.

I voted No. I agree with Lordfly on this one as well. As for there being a government to intervene in player disputes, I would prefer for the final decision to be made by LL, since they have more control of what the outcome might be (e.g. land transfers, bannings, etc.).

"No." I think those that want to explore governance can do so with the group features of SL. Find like-minded folks, group up, and knock youselves out. "Let a thousand flowers blossom," for those so motivated. If the group features need a few extra things to fully support these exeriments, *that* seems like a valid thing to request from LL.

I weighed this very carefully before voting NO.

It's no secret that Linden Lab's staff is overextended now, what with the continuing surge in population. And Philip had a very good point in yesterday's town hall: SL's players are closer to the issues. Given these two facts alone, it makes sense to decentralize SL's government and make it "a government of the people".

HOWEVER... having met some of SL's other players, and seen their behavior on these forums, I have to say there's no way in hell I'm giving them any more control over my SL experience than they already have. I don't want a government of self-appointed (and self-important) politicians, and if push came to shove, I would simply refuse to recognize it.

But more importantly, this just reeks of Linden Lab once again passing the buck and shirking their responsibilities. This is the same horse hockey they pulled with the "Live Help" system, farming out the job of paid LL employees to paying SL customers. Guys, you have 8 million dollars. You have no excuse not to hire on more help.

This is a very unfortunate polling question.

The question should be "Should players be allowed to form self governments"

I voted no. If you want a resident government, buy yourself a sim and go play politics. I pay to play, pay for land, pay for tier - no other resident is going to tell me what to do. Also think about the people who would want to run for this so called government - not the best people for the job, but those who want the power. Bad idea.

LL have to get their act together, get more staff.

NO PLAYER GOVERNMENT IN SL EVER

I voted no because the question was about an overarching, grid-wide government, not a private affair. And nobody's -convincingly- defined the need for such a government. Or the benefit. Or the rights, responsibilities, and protections. Or why anyone would think the libertarian masses would place themselves under the "care" of such a government.

I think some sort of general social and economic order in SL would stabilize business, enhance profit, crush rumors, distribute information efficiently, arbitrate disputes fairly, and generally make the experience more pleasant for everyone -- thereby, you might say, "raising the standard of living". But a social and economic order doesn't necessarily mean "government" in a traditional political sense, and it's not going to be anything like what I've read about so far.
