I'm not anti-marriage, just pro-equality. Why do married people get all these special perks? A married person is no better than a single person. Why not strip married people of all their specila perks and level the playing field.
Your Single Friend,

Why do married people get special perks? Because sometime back in history, the State decided that there were social and economic benefits to marriage that were good for Society As A Whole. Having determined this, they decided to then eventually will the infrastructure into place, with your tax dollars and mine. Tax breaks, laws, benefits, etc etc etc. The entire legal structure that differentiates "married" people (or rather, civil-unionized people) from single people. You can ALWAYS get "married", as long as you find a religion willing to do it for you. But you have to play by the State's rules if you want to cash in on the benefits of the "civil union" Besides, can you imagine the economic segment that would be devistated if people stopped having marriages?!?! My God!! Think of the poor caterers who still have to put their kids through college!!! Imagine all the money that could be pumped into the economy by letting gay people get married!!

On the negative side of marriage, your partner's debt is your debt. One person ruins their credit, the other is thusly affected.

True,
On the other hand, my idea is that if you're forced to pay taxes for it, you shouldn't be discriminated against by the State.
To wit, if you are gay, and your taxes go to cover State marriage benefits, and the State denies you, as a gay person, the ability to get a "secular marriage/civil union" like everyone else, then it seems to me that gay people should get a tax break.
What was that old chestnut? No taxation without representation?

From: Wanker Kraken Giving someone a tax break because they are gay? I think wed have alottt of unmarried people claiming homosexuality to save a few bucks lol . Hell *shrugs* I would lol Well, the only way to prevent that from happening is to let gays who, like the rest of us in this country, are forced at the point of a virtual gun to give tax money to the State, get married. Then they are equal, and are represented. That still leaves the issue of "single people" being forced to pay taxes for the benefits of married people. But at least they have the option of getting married, and taking advantage of said benefits if they so desire.

-Ghoti Yes. Flat taxes for all! And just because you "can" get married, doesn't mean it will happen. Nerd girls have it hard.

I wonder what the OP thinks about illegal immigration, which is not really OT since tons of our taxes are paying for that class of person as well...

I consider this pretty simple: You come into this country illegally, I want you caught and kicked out. ASAP. Pretty much every other first world country in the world is TOUGH to immigrate into legally, and don't put up with illegals at all. Why should the U.S. be any different? What inherant right does the rest of the world have to sneak past our borders illegally and take advantage of our system? I think it's a slap in the face to all the people who go through the YEARS of buracracy and hard work to legally enter this country.

Well said, though I sometimes wonder why we make the immigration process so difficult for some but not others. For instance, my partner is a doctoral candidate here on a student visa. You would not believe the hoops he is going through to become a naturalized citizen -- simply because he is a highly educated professional.

I kind of like what Canada lets you do, which is pay them a nice chunk of money, and they will fast track you on your way towards citizenship

You're saying that one day all people will be equal - Its just not possible unless everyone was exactly the same. There will always be people that make more money then you , have a better quality of life then you, have different abilities and disabilities then you. If your saying that some day homosexual couples will have the same EQUAL benefits as straight couples , i dont doubt that .. But what im saying is there will always be something -someone doesnt feel there being treated equal over. OVER ALL equality is not possible.

And probably will some day.

Eboni wants to pay 10% flat tax. Eboni is willing to push any other agenda further to achieve this goal.
Thats about all you need to know.

And probably will some day. I dont - I think homosexuals should be able to form a partnership and get tax benefits just like any straight married couple, .. but i dont think these marriage benefits should be taken away so that the single people dont feel cheated. what kind of sense does that make ? Im single , when /if i do get married I have a tax break to look forward too - great. If i dont im not goin to bitch because my married friend gets a tax benefit that i dont - besides, he has to sleep with the SAME woman EVERY night *sigh* poor guy , just aint fair heh
