HISTORY I know this is a bit late.. but I was at work apparently when all this was going down.... so I just wanted to make my point here, mainly because I was a doner -- a large one. When I first met Oneir, he had incredible visions of a themepark (and to clarify--these are the mushrooms and enourmous bongs that were sighted), which eventually started to rise in Stanley -- practicaly accross the "street" from where I resided in Federal at the time. I watched the massive ambitions, aspirations and struggles of a new player form and develop right before my eyes. That's an awesome experience. It's one thing to go through "growing up"... it's another thing to watch someone ELSE "growing up". I've also been given the pleasure to work near him in Coney -- one of 2 sims designated for the Linden World Amusement Park. Another build I'm proud to say I "lived" near. Oneir, you have a HUGE heart and a lot of care and feeling for everything that you do. You put an enourmous amount of emotion into your builds and into what other people say or do around you... and I really wish i could just clone you over and over Mad respect from this end. Which brings me to the PRESENT. I came to that auction knowing what it was for.... my mindset was "Oneir is gonna be a happy man tonight!" Hell that get's me off personally just IMAGINING the smile that I can bring to just ONE individual that I care for. If this whole fiasco turned into trustfunds and this and that completely twisting the original idea I had... I would have MANUALY given Oneir the $23,450 that I personaly donated, to him for his aspirations, goals, dreams, visions and just for being what he has come today. Bravo to those who made the correct "decisions for his money." Sorry... i just had to get that off my chest. Game on. --Water

"the day of the event.....half way through the 3 hour auction it comes to the attention of some of the donators and event staff that oneiron is not in need.....he is not poor....he's having the same problem that everyone else is....and that is that he can't have everything he makes in the world at the same time. " I have been so busy, that I forgot the actual date for the auction. Otherwise I would have been there. My impression was that the auction was not so much because Onei was in "need", but because someone wanted to bring together others that wanted to support Onei's designs and all that he brings to SL. Onei is a semi-neighbor of mine (a few places over and it actually sits on the edge of land just outside my land). I make sure daily to go and vote for his work. Those giant bongs you speak of are for a much bigger cause. I won't go into here, but encourage anyone who is interested to go and read the signs on this property and find out just what it is all about. I for one fully support the cause that Onei is bringing into SL (though I'm sure this is just one of many). I would have donated to Onei not because he is in need (I never assumed he was), but because I would have wanted to support his work. I have seen nothing that would have led me to believe that this was being done because Onei was "poor". My opinion, Onei should keep all the money, or *each* donor should be allowed the option to take back their money or allow it to be used however the organizers see fit. That's just my opinion of course.

Payment Made & Discussions Appreciated
10-28-2003 21:04
As of this evening full and complete payment has been made to our friend One for all monies collected at the auction last evening. We would like to thank all who participated in the auction at every phase of the proceedings. It was not the intention of anyone involved with the auction to cause any controversy or upset. Quite to the contrary, we were more than delighted to see that the residents of Second Life could be rallied to help each other in such a manner.
Many valuable lessons can be learned from this experience and it is up to each of us to draw our individual conclusions as to which is the best one to take away ourselves.
We wish One the best and hope that he will invite us to view his forthcoming exciting new projects!!
Lastly, thank you all for your honest, thoughful, and valued posts during the day today...

Good to hear Oneironaut. Though I might never see what comes of it, I'm just glad the organizers did what was right and originally intended.

I second the preceeding motion to have a benefit auction for Darwin Appleby.
I am glad to see that this has been largely resolved and I applaud the participants in the thread for working through this initially contentious issue. And yes, Baccara, I do think that there is much to be learned here for all (well at least for me, but I'm kinda solipsistic that way).

This whole discussion seems pretty over with, but I've got to add my 2 cents anyway.
When Neil and I first started in SL, we bought our first plot of land near Onei's place. We picked that plot so that we could look out of the windows of the house and see Onei's giant bong rising triumphant over the landscape, a testimony to what can be done in SL. When we moved from Stanford, my chief regret was losing Onei as a nieghbor. I remember clearly meeting Onei for the first time. He was my first friend in-game, the first person to take an interest in me as myself, not treat me like another stupid noob. I adore him for that, and he has been a loyal friend who i cherish deeply ever since. Anyone with a contrary opinion, dont say it within 40m of me. you'll get your eyepixels clawed out. I am dissapointed that the organizers of this event would even for a moment attempt to tell him what he should do with the proceeds, though i am heartened that in the end that was not the course of action taken. I donated a modest amount to Onei independant of the auction, and am glad now that I did it independantly.
Onei, pls cease feeling embarrased over the amount of money raised. You are loved, and you deserve every penny you receieved. Its a testament to your talent, kindness, and heart. Congrats to you Onei, I am thrilled for you and wish you the best. You've been talking about the Escherland project for quite some time now, and I am thrilled to see it come to fruition. You deserve this utterly, you are an amazing person, and SL would benefit greatly from an OneiCloner. Luv Luv Luv, Neph

to avoid confusion, this comment relates chiefly to whoever it was that spewed venom in Onei's direction earlier in this thread. cant remember exactly who it was, and im not going to go remind myself lest i be tempted to hold a grudge.
