Its a treatment not a cure. While some patients showed a 90% decline in the disease as much as a year later they still were HIV positive. Hopefully though this brakthrough helps to produce the cure.

Yes, but if you read it all, they also are reviving their immune system, effectivly removing the effects of the disease.

This is very cool news! Let's just hope that when they finally put it on the market it isn't so expensive that only the super rich can afford it.

This is pretty damn sweet. I certainly hope though, this doesn't embolden people to go out and start doing the nasty without the same precautions they should already be using.

Those who will will. They will whether or not HIV is cured. But between education and now a possible cure at least we have a fighting chance to stop this pandemic. Many of us who don't have it should consider ourselves lucky. I know I do. One broken rubber is all it takes.
Yes you can increase your risk level by acting in an irrational manner but it still comes down to a broken rubber with someone you thought was healthy.

The only thing that pisses me off is that the FDA passed a drug to give old men a hard on before anyone here ever heard about this breakthrough. C'est la vie though. Good news any way you look at it.

Ryan you silly rabbit, I almost friggin wet myself (with a glass of wine that is)!!! :)

Ohh and I found it slightly amusing that the Merck website makes no mention of this in thier pages regarding HIV in Botswana. Not that I would expect them to as they are likely trying to duplicate the research as fast as possible to claim the accolades and dollars in the US.

And I'm sure the poor people around the world will be happy to wait the 15 years it takes for the drug company's patent to wear out before a generic drug is allowed that they would be able to afford.

Oh, and I'm sure Bush will make an exception to the recent prescription drug bill to allow negotiation to the price of this drug. Yeah, right.

But on the bright note, not just "go France and Brazil" - a great number of researchers around the world worked on the cure and continue to research, and share their findings. They should all be praised as part of the solution.

A few researches make a great stride in science and somehow conspiracy theories about drug companies and President Bush already surface. Niiiiice.

Touche Moi. So to all those out there working on this research bravo. And I agree with you on the first points, it is what I was sort of saying with my Merck comment.

We will see how long it takes the FDA to approve the therapy in the US. Hopefully you are right in thinking that these are conspiracy theories but so far the FDA has proven otherwise when it comes to treatments of this sort. Maybe they will change thier tune on this one.

Yeah, only after they knew the States were competent enough to fight the war.

Sorry, doesn't count. :p

Let's face it, France's record is not pretty...

Edit: Although they did go pretty wild there during/after the French Revolution. That was pretty cool.

So you really think the US (unprepared, inadequately armed) had a chance to beat the british (most powerful army of the time), all by themselves? LOL

I'm probably being really naive here but... I cant help thinking that there is a big parallel between England's position as a world power a few hundred years ago and the States' position now: theyre both essentially islands wrt the available military power of the time.

Nah, any European nation against those colonies was an unfair fight. Would they have lost that war? Probably. Would they have been independent eventually? Probably... They weren't going to suddenly become loyal subjects again after that and they'd only get stronger.

The French had in a previous war had their butts kicked by the Brits, and they were probably thinking about protecting their own colonies as well, which were nearby. It wasn't just a favor to the Americans, put it that way. Doubtful the French would have been able to defeat the British in a war at the time, if it had not been for the hardship the Americans suffered fighting the Brits beforehand.

French record in the last 100 years is pretty one-sided, though.

Zuzi - They get it by fighting with other cats who have the virus. You can get them tested and vaccinated for it, but the vaccine needs to be renewed every year. It is a very similar disease to HIV. Also, if the mother cat had the disease, the baby cat can be born with it. I had this happen to one of my rescue kitties a few years ago. So sad.

I was told that if you have one kitty with it, all your kitties run the risk of getting it.
Never bring an uninfected cat into a group of infected cats.
Wash your hands, etc. if you've been in contact with an infected cat before touching your own cat or others.

Camille - that is absolutely correct unless they have been vacinated. That's one of the real problems with taking rescue animals. You have to be really careful.
