I've always wanted to see Real time weather in SL, so i made a vote for it. Vote up if you would like to see some of my idea's come to Second life. :D

I voted for it! I'd love to see weather fronts move across the grid, snowing in the snow sims and raining in the tropical sims. Imagine a five day weather forecast posted on the secondlife website. :)

Naturally, there would have to be a way to override it in the debug menu. Provided that was possible I'd love it.

I don't see why this is necessary. IM me in game and I can set up the weather effects of your choice.

It can be disabled by disabling particles. :D

What can one do? Is it just snow and rain or could one create dynamic moving clouds with rain? That's what I'd like. :)

Clouds can also be done. It all depends on the sim resources you want to devote to the project, and how much time you want to spend doing it.

Actually, I have a static (random) cloud system, but it's only a fledgling project. Depending on your draw distance, I could probably "seed" the clouds with it. :D

Dynamic, moving clouds with rain sounds great. It would also be cool to see an occasional hail storm with hail bouncing off things. Lightning would be great too, especially if it responded to textures set as "metal."

And think of the broader possibilities: FLOODS

Now we're getting into more complicated stuff. Lightning is a touch more difficult - but it's doable. As is hail via llRezObject.

However, "floods" are impossible with the present tools unless you have a simulator owner* sitting there playing with the settings or do it with prims. This makes sense... the current water and sim-connection system would suffer way too many problems if water height varied. :D

ok ok heres my Idea. some my like it, others may not but here goes.

I would like to.... say... be sitting in the newbie zone just chatting like I usually do. say the sun is starting to set and in the distance you can hear thunder. Wouldnt it be cool to be able to pick up on these cue's and know that a thunderstorm may be comming. maybe be able to see disnt flashing or some sort. Also something like a weather map that can be brought up to see weather patterns on the main land. Im not asking for anything that would accumulate or anything like that but just something to add to the atmosphere. Say a snow sim you could times of snow or even every once in a while a bit of a blizzard. mind you nothing that would accumulate but just an idea. the only thing i would like to see is how storms and rain would be handled as far as buildings go. ( rain not passing through walls like particals do).

Again, I'm seeing nothing here that can't be done by a scripter worth his/her salt. :D

Two words: Cut Distance.

Clouds for me are coolest when seen from afar.

I made a response on this topic on the other thread. Essentially, it's limited by a client's draw distance and the material type/size of the object emitting the particles.

Positional weather effects are best handled locally, with the exception of clouds.

Jeffrey, if you can do all of the features people listed above (non-pass through of effects into buildings and such being the biggest thing) *without* it being laggy to high populated sims, I will give you an award of some sort.

I personaly would love to see weather across SL and a way to see it through a map as well. I think SL eventualy will have a built in one, due to the clouds setting the stage, question is just when.

Oh, Jeffrey, Lost fan? (from your title)

Not particularly. I just like the meaning of the phrase "Dues Ex Machina." :D

And I like the computer game Deus Ex. But seeing as that's somewhat besides the point... this is an interesting proposal...

Why stop with normal weather phenomena? It would be nice to have showers of flaming bonzai kittens rain down every once in a while.

ok I just rocked the vote for this one too. I would LOVE SL weather. And I agree with Ulrika that we should be able to turn it off (or better yet, choose the weather we want) from the debug menu.

Actualy, how about Per-Parcel weather settings?

I suggested this awhile back I think, but it'd go something like this...

Say your only land option is an area that has alot of rain, but you don't like alot of rain, so you go to the About Land window and set "No Weather", then whenever you or someone else enters your plot (for more than 5 seconds to prevent fly-overs from being disrupted or some sort) it does not rain on the parcel or, even perhaps anywhere else. But, to anyone looking *in* to your property form outside of it, it appears to be raining still or whatever the weather is supposed to be on your parcel.

Kinda like a debug mode toggle, but automatic based on land parcel settings.

This however could also lessen themes, i.e. allow people to build out of theme more of a Rainforest themed continent.

Weather settings would also need to be able to be set via Estate controls of course.

Regardless, a Debug menu option to turn off weather would be definitly needed.

I know little about the scripting here yet, but *real* weather seems unlikely to be possible.

What I miss is the rain. It would be sooo nice if it rained once in a while.
But if I am not mistaken... there are several impossible feats here.

- objects cannot get "wet" in any realistic way
- water cannot accumulate (no puddles) :(
- rain passes through buildings (if particles)

All you would get is hazy "rain effect" of little worth and with great impact on game play.

Additionaly, particle effects of that size would crash a lot of people out of the game or make it completely unuseable for them.

If a thunderstorm was approaching peole would be screaming and running or logging out under those conditions.

Might be funny to watch, but not pleasant for most.
