When did SL stop being fun

I was making new stuff, feeling creative and happy, although I hadn't got to the point of selling any of my items.

Last week I had a car crash and since then, I have to force myself to log on to SL and do anything. I know this sounds stupid but its just how I feel at the moment.

I really hope this is a phase which passes as I paid for an annual membership lol.

Alexa... thank you.... You prod me and I'll prod you back.... we will make this fun again... Sorry I have been so cranky lately and I wish that relaxing in the SL sun did for me what it does for you... I really do. Car accidents can get to a person... at least you have a legitimate excuse....

Onwards and upwards.

The thing is with SL and being fun, you have to look at it in two ways:

1. Is it a job for you or not.
2. Can you find ways to keep yourself entertained?

Meaning, has SL become so tedius, (gotta make money gotta do this gotta do that, blah blah blah) just to make a living.

I view SL as a place to be. Not something to profit off of, although yes there are many times for that opportunity, I choose not to, although for some folks, having a business is fun for them. I'm slightly getting into the club scene, simply because I enjoy socializing.

Building or creating isn't always a priority for me. But then again, people are different.

Technical Problems Severely Reduce Fun
02-10-2005 16:49
Second Life worked reasonably well when I started out about a year ago, but during that time I have acquired the problems of up to 50 percent ghosting rate, rubberbanding when sizing, rotating or moving objects, scripts reverting to previous versions and not running before my patience wears out, and perhaps ten percent of other people's avatars don't display their bodies or name text but their attachments show up floating in the air. This means I spend little time building and scripting and a lot of time filing bug reports which to date have brought no fruitful response.

I'm one of the lucky ones. I have a job in SL where I earn US$s for building. And I have fun in SL, running my own virtual business, creating, building and attending fun events.

I keep the two separate - setting aside different times of day to log on for "work" or "play". (My virtual business qualifies as "play"!)

To me, SL is the medium in which I exist much of the time. Some of the time I work there - as others go to work in RL. And some of the time I play there - and if I wasn't having fun, I wouldn't be there. And then, very rarely - very rarely - I sleep.

When did SL stop being fun?

I am a noob to both the forums and to sl, in general. Though I have been treated with kindness and respect on many occaisions, I have a friend who has been treated poorly in more than one instance (I, personally, have wittnessed two such manners transgressions). As a direct result of an incident last night, my friend will not return to sl and has cancelled his membership. In case you are wondering, he attended a public event but was forced to leave when every other attendee began IMing each other--using chat only to 'lol.' Overly-sensitive AV you posit? Perhaps. But it is tough to be a noob--a problem compounded by callousness and self-interest on the parts of a few.

My point? SL will cease to be fun when new members are marginalized simply because they are new. SL will lose vibrant, creative, and insightful, albeit sensitive, individuals when they are made to feel less-than. SL, like rl, becomes less enjoyable for everyone when those who should be respected and admired shun, disparage, or outright ignore the less experienced.

I might be labeled a 'griefer' for this post, but I feel that I had to say something on behalf of my friend. We all lost someone cool this time.

It's still fun and I have lots more to see and eventually do.

Sometimes fun factor is lowered by rude people at the welcome center but I just ignore them.

SL can be fun for everyone

You have brought up a tangentally related point, Mojo. Thank you.

I spend a great deal of my time at the Welcome Center. 'Why?' you ask, 'Trolling for nubile young studs?' No. I hang out at the Welcome Center because the group of regulars (you know who you are) are downright hysterical. Night after night, I find myself laughing until wine/ginger ale/water spews out of my nose. Some nights, the Welcome Center is sl at its best: witty, urbane, clever, funny, surreal, strange, sexy.

Some nights, however, I watch as new arrivals are ignored or brushed off. I will help when their questions are not beyond my very, very limited skill set. Oftentimes, I watch helplessly as the noobs are snubbed. Do the regulars have any idea how intimidating they look? (Conversely, I have watched as a wonton noob brazenly approaches and solicts an 'elder statesman/woman.' )

It appears (at least to me) that there is a burgeoning genenration gap in SL. Is there any way to bridge this gap if we can agree that it exists?

Actually, it wasn't very fun for me at all at first. I wouldn't say i had a good time here at all until the end of December, but I remained here to see some friends who migrated here and I wished to still speak to.

Fortunately, I've found ways of keeping myself amused here and there and it's not so utterly boring now. Some of the new people I've met seem to be of a similar enough mindset that it's become more of a new habit between SL and EFnet #secondlife. I'm not too optimistic on how long it's going to last, but really I'm not going to worry about that.

There are good things out there, you just have to stumble across them by exploring.

Or wait for a n00b with a big mouth to start arguing with you. That's also a great way to meet people. ;)
