Okay I'm a bad liberal, but what's the deal with ANWR?

I am a very bad liberal when it comes to the environment. Sometimes I recycle but I do it for selfish reasons. It has to do with having too much trash and the city wanting to charge me for an extra can if it doesn't all fit into one. Using the recycle bin it all fits.

Now I am reading that it is bad to drill for oil in ANWR. Why? Why do I care?

Is there likely to be any oil worth finding there? Will it make a huge difference for the country? Best case scenarios?

What dies if we drill in ANWR? Lots of species of birds and fish? Any really cute animals? What so bad if they die? Why should I care?

I am generally apathetic when it comes to the environment and really have tuned out this entire ANWR thing. Are there other aspects of this I might be missing?

Well, Neehai, if that is your general sense and feeling around the issue then I think that trying to allow a different perspective for you to see may very well be a waste of time.

But thanks for the offer! :D

I'm not sure what you mean. My general feeling is apathy on this issue.

Just think of it this way: Drilling in the ANWR will likely access whole slip-veins and cache-basins of Christians deep under the earth. Hundreds of millions of Christians will be pumped out of Alaska, put on superpassengerships and distributed across the planet every day. The world economy will come to depend on Christianity, as millions and millions of Christians are put into gas tanks or used to generate electricity or lubricate machinery every day.

However, the cost of drilling will be to turn northern Alaska into Dante's Seventh Level of Hell.

There. Now do you care?

There's a great idea for a sci-fi movie... sort of Event Horizon meets Cool Runnings with a touch of Driving Miss Daisy.

It's not oil. It's Primoleum.

Don't you folks read Magellian Linden's blog? ;)

You know all those prims have to come from *somewhere*.

It's definitely NOT an issue of oil, for once.

It's an issue of precedent.

If we allow them to start drilling in Alaska, then who's to say they can't start ruining other national reserves? Even big oil companies say that there's hardly enough oil to make any real effect on the industry.

Many Republicans see these big pieces of land that's just sitting there, being wasted by all the cute little bunny rabbits and foxes and all those millions of stupid trees, when they could cut it all down and build strip malls.

It's precedent, plain and simple.

I was involved with Alaskan fishemen during the Exxon Valdez grounding and spill. To this day, many are still before the courts seeking proper compensation. Sixteen years of acromony does not do coastal communities any good. Tens of thousands of birds died, several salmon hatcheries lost rotations and some tourism was offset for a few years. Tankers have improved somewhat since then, as has traffic management, but we all know that complacency is the precursor to disaster.

The total consumption to availability ratio is about 5% of current demands over the next 20 years. It certainly is not the silver bullet everyone is looking for. It does mean short term economic revenue to Alaskans at large.

If every driver and consumer is willing to accept the responsibilty of the hazards, fine. Just don't be whining when prices go up as a result of such disasters.

Personally, I think the effort can be better spent seeking alternatives, but Bush poo poo's
those plans. Gee, I wonder why? Can you say MONEY?

Um

Get a rag

Wipe your bald ass head

wring out in pan

do this daily and you should be able to change the oil in the durango in a couple years.
