Perhaps broadening the category of possible activities in Second Life might be helpful. Scripting, clothing design, building, relationships, clubs, shopping and selling are, in my eyes, only the foundation blocks of a fulfilling Second Life. Combine a few of these things into an ongoing endeavor and you've got yourself a great SRd'E (Second Raison d'Etre).
A few examples off the top of my avi:
The Second Life Herald -- which I was lucky to find soon after I came to SL, otherwise I might be feeling exactly as Jim is
The Second Life Public Library
The Parks & Rec project
The several games within the game that have sprung up
and more.
There are also financial institutions, think tanks, reams of interesting research to be produced, and things like mentoring, live help or just generally flying around being useful to people, which is a great way to feel like one has a purpose.
I think the point here is to find something open-ended, like SL itself, something that will change and grow as the society around it changes and grows, something that self-renews by its very nature. It's not always easy to find what that is, but I imagine the time and effort of waiting, considering and searching would be worth it in the end.

If you don't mind 80s music you can come hang out with us at the Shelter. We actually talk to each other and do stuff occasionally. I'm nuts but I'm fun, and I don't think any of us bite

From: Jim Levy ...things seem to have gotten bad. Ill probably just take a break or somthing. How have things gotten bad, Jim? Sometimes a break from SL is a good idea; it helps you focus on exactly what you might most miss about SL. Sometimes, when you do something every day, it starts to become a bit of a chore. Taking a break and then coming back refreshed might be just what you need to make SL enjoyable again for you. I know that some SL people have also taken some time off to play other games for a while. Just do come back, if you take a break.

From: Paolo Portocarrero I tell ya though, Jim. SL needs more comedians! How about you come over and put on an improv show at my theater???
I agree. I've heard a rumor that Club Platium is setting up a comedy hour like event soon. I'm hoping for some really good laughs.

Not sure if this was a classified ad or something else, but it seemed like it was Off-topic for sure.

This is not Off-Topic
01-19-2005 10:20
Respectfully disagreeing with you, Jeska. How is this Off-Topic? It's about how to enjoy SL, a question many people seem to be grappling with right now.
Off-Topic is supposed to be about RL. This has nothing to do with RL.
There's a thread somewhere in General, I think, that's all about how the person can't get in-world because they can't afford to have their computer fixed, something like that. Is that going to be Off-Topic too now? I don't get it.
I only post this because I liked this thread and was missing it because I don't usually check in Off-Topic because it's off-topic. It's RL stuff, which is not what I look to the forums for.
This thread is about SL and belongs elsewhere. Hopefully the original author hasn't lost his thread as well. Considering what he's posting about here, that would just be adding insult to (perceived) injury.
