i think it would rock socks to have a working meaningful city in sl just cause it would be cool. big fat but, i kinda think things in sl develop based on the needs they serve. irl people live in cities cause it's a good way to have everything close together that you need to live. saves time and effort. they build tall cause that's a cheap way to use expensive (high demand) land.

in sl we can teleport and fly around like crazy and not get tired, and we don't have to worry so much about using our time since all the time we spend in sl is basically leisure time. so distance and time saving are out for factors that lead to city growth. building tall (usually) takes alot of land since it needs alot of prims so there's not the drive to build skyscrapers in sl to save land area. as far as i can see the only need for a city in sl is the need for cool creative things but i dunno how much of a cohesive force that is for a four sim giant building project. probably would end up with something very cool looking that no ones uses cause we don't have the same needs in sl as irl. just my thoughts.

for the same reason you don't see many bathrooms or kitchens in sl. the ones you see are there cause someone thought it would be cool to have one for the realism, same as i was saying about a city. but i don't think they go in there and sit on the toilet or stare into the fridge much, same as i was saying about a city. :D

Well outside of working through some of the technical logistics of this endevour, and determining if it's feasible...I think it's a wonderful idea, and what I wanted when I joined SL and Nova Albion was on the auction block.

I am offering my services to this project if it comes to be, and I will also offer assitance in planning, testing, or just prim manipulation. Due to object constraints in the infrastructure in Nova Albion, my hopes never materialized, and Umber City has been the closest thing that I had envisioned, although it suffers from intense lag being in a single sim. I still want an urban environment that will be a humming metropolis within SL and i would love to be of assistance.

I'd love to lend a hand if need be, I'm just a mediocre builder but I love to do it. This would be an awesome project to work on. And for what it's worth Jay, I spend a lot of time in your cities.

I'd do it. But I'd like to see more done than copies of existing RL cityscapes.

Okay, I did a quick simulation using 4 of the sims in the sandbox region near Cordova. One sim was a new hyperthreaded server, one a very old server, and two were servers shared on the void server banks. Not a real test bed, as the servers completely sucked in terms of the hardware, but repreasent the worst possible scenario.

I rezzed about 40,000 prims amost all of the areas, representing a 16sqm area amongst all of the areas. After about 8 sim crashes, the results weren't pretty. Unfortunately, SL is not quite at the capabilites to support such a project. I wish it were so, but SL can't support a community like this. The server and client software is not up to the task. :\

I'm curious to what extent sending data to avatars across sims effects performance. Because if you have a sqaure of 4 sims, and an avatar at the center, all 4 sims have to send data to that avatar. The work isn't necessarily distributed, it might actually be multiplied. If, however, you left the center (relatively) empty, and avatars concentrated along the outer edges, this would decrease the amount of traffic across sims (assuming reasonable draw distances). The areas around the edges would still be close to each other and connected.

I don't really know much about how sims work and I know this could be very confused thinking on my part :)

EDIT - Um, never mind, khamon said it shorter and faster! :)
