I read the thing and it says the guy "thinks", not knows it is 616. The number code is correct but 666 is the code for Nero who persicuted, tortured and killed thousands of Christians. It is doubtfull that it is not him that the writer of Revelations was referring to.

I used to have the 616 area code. It used to cover most of the north-western half of michigan. Then they changed it about 6-7 years ago.

I work in a rather large bookstore. All the aisles have numbers. When they built a new room the last aisle of Theology was 666. Unfortunately they took out an aisle somewhere and it became 664.

This is what happens when journalists editorialize instead of getting quotes.

Due to the short number of words, I suspect this was a typical press release re-write that newspapers do to fill space. No research was done, just simply taking an announcement of some news and editorializing to put it in context.

A newly discovered fragment of the oldest surviving copy of the New Testament

Error: The New Testament was text established by the Catholic Church from a broad set of documents. Anything that is was not translateable and omitted from the New Testament could obviously, then, not be part of the New Testament.

One could say it is part of John's original revelation, and perhaps it seems like semantics, but the difference is that this would have to be officially adopted by Christian churches; it couldn't just be taken at face value; truly, if that were the case, all apocraphal and Gnostic writings would be accepted. (Not to say they shouldn't be considered that... ah, good ole' organized religion)

Actually, the beast is not explicitly the Antichrist. In Revelations the two are thought to be two seperate things. Most scholars believe that the Antichris may refer to a specific person, while The Beast refers to an empire or dynasty or such.

This is also subject to a lot of coincidence. Interesting fact: The Bush family name originally was "Busche" in its roots.

Though the idea of attacking a person in shielded writing is a tradition in history - think Jonathon Swift's satires or the punished celebrities in Dante's Inferno.

No. Theologins have been debating which "John", but by the sheer fact (as stated in the article) that this was dated to the late 3rd century, it could not have been John of the 12 Disciples fame. There's a difference between Satanists and people who actually worship Satan. As Gilmore points out, the Satanist Church uses it not to worship some mythical being; they use it because they don't like Christianity. (They don't believe in God or Satan.)

Ugh, fascinating subject (linguistics, numerology, religion) written in a crappy article.

I just realized something.

F is the 6th letter of the alphabet.
I is the 9th letter.
C is the 3rd letter.

6+9+3=18

18 divided by 3 (three letters, F, I, C), equals 6

There are three 6's in 18.

666!!!
