I'm wondering how many people have considered buying an Island Sim but decided not to - and for what reasons.
I don't mean due to the stability issues of the past weeks, but since the Island Sims first became available.

I considered and then didn't when we had all the asset server problems over the summer.
I cancelled my order. A few months later a Linden sent me an email asking and I explained it was due to stability issues. _____________________

I love having a private Island, and I think LL is doing thier best to make them worth every penny.. There are so many more things you can do with an island compared to the mainland...
We have 3 island currently, and still unsure what we are doing with the 3rd lol but I would reccomentd to anyone that can afford it... _____________________

I should clarify that I think island sims are great when I visit them and I appreciate them in SL.
I am just the kind of person that would become extremely resentful if I had an island with the current technical problems. As such, it would have been a bad idea for me. I am sure it is a wonderful option for many others who have a normal level of patience. _____________________

I considered buying an island a few months back but after thinking about it I realized I would miss Jenner and the mainland to much.

Make it another DL sim ![]() (i'm not suggesting you take me seriously) Hehe I already offered DL another island, but I am not sure Mark and Pirate are ready for it... I know they are a small team and working very hard on new ideas and such... I imagine if they get more creators and scripters they would be all for another island. _____________________

I considered it for awhile, but the performance issues with them, coupled with the fact that I would have to move several very large builds made me decide against purchasing one. I also love being on the mainland - island sims have a weird feel to me, I don't think I would like it, even with the benefits.

I was very very close to selling all my land to Anshe Chung and purchasing an Island... I then realized that it would not be a good business decision for me, as Anshe would buy my land low as well as the fact that I would be hard pressed to earn the $200 a month back in the game.
One of the main reasons was that I have been in Laka since it came on the grid and I would miss it quite a bit. My partner and I own nearly a full sim tier near telehubs on the main land, so why scrap those and get an island? _____________________

Actually, that has been a goal since I started. But first I had to build up the SL economy to support it. The last couple of months has been good enough, but I think I'll just stick to my plot in Arcata for a good while longer.
Why? Well, stability issues is a minor reason. Random Sim performance, seemingly random bans to people I like and respect, non-banning of others, unresolved abuse reports on stolen/resold products and event censorship are by far the issues that makes me go "uhmmm, nah, i dont think so". The latest couple of days didnt help my attitude either. |

Private sims are a good deal if you have projects big enough to justify paying for one whole sim. You have better control over your environment than possible on the mainland.
I am helping people upgrade to private sims now. You can pay me in L$, US$ or EUR and if you like I can also help you unload your mainland estate so that you only pay the difference. Currently I have two sims in stock for considerably lower price than what Linden Lab sells them for ![]() _____________________

I only thought briefly about it then rejected the idea.
1. I had read reports here for months from people who already owned island sims and saw that they had bug problems and customer service problems. 2. Bidding at auction is way more fun and you have a variety of parcels of differing sizes and locations. 3. Having the flexibility to terraform is a delight to some but if you aren't talented at terraforming it becomes a management problems. 4. I worried that no one would ever visit me on a private island sim -- half the fun in doing projects is having random people fly by and get into conversations. 5. I wondered if it would be easy to subdivide and sell a private island -- it didn't seem practical. 6. Now I see that private island sims that cost someone one $995 plus $195 tier are going for $799 from Anshe. Why is this happening? Are a lot of private sim owners bailing due to bug or customer service problems? Or is it just poor FPS and lag? |

I've occasionally had the money to toy with this idea. Presently, I don't. I may again.
I think the big show-stopper for me is the current practical limitations on physics and inter-object communication. If I were to spring for a sim, I'd want it for trying something big with lots of moving parts, running pretty reliably on a tight clock. The Lindens have hinted at a revamp of the XML-RPC system sometime during the first half of 1995, yes? Depending on what it looks like, that plus Havok II could tempt me, especially now that folks like Anshe are fueling a used sim market. Well, that plus having the money at the time ![]() == danny d. |

I don't mean due to the stability issues of the past weeks, but since the Island Sims first became available. I've seriously considered island purchase in the past month. Clearly there are major issues: A) over billing B) child grid is going to open reguardless of what the majority feels. C) island lag sucks. D) equipment failier. E) inventory loss. No island purchase for at least a year. |

I'll consider it when the grid is more stable, some of the group/permissions/security/service issues are ironed out, and server migration doesn't hit various sims too hard. Since it's a larger investment, I'd also like to see what LL is going to do with the eight million and get a better sense of what SL's future might be.
