I think "Jukebox" items should be banned from SL.
Reasons?
1) The content of them in SL is about 97% illegal anyhow. 2) Sending 200 sound pre-loads to every single person within the radius is insane.
They're horrible, poorly written, and above all, somewhere about a galaxy's distance past obnoxious.
If nothing else, make it so an object can only pre-load 1 soundclip at a time.

I agree. That's a waste of resources.

Do you mean all in-game music? Like playable CDs, etc? Without being able to preload more than one sound, they won't work too well. Actually some other items (not music related) might not work very well either.

Most start a preload of all clips and then start playing. This will fail anyhow, so it's a bad way to do things The sounds will cache after the first full play through, so why bother with preloads? Just let them play once through, then go, it's how SL works.

I don't think ALL jukeboxes should be baned. But I do agree pre-loading 200 songs in insane, I say take it up with the scripter.

I say NO BANS of ANYTHING that does not violate the TOS directly. I could have a jukebox with fully legal music on it, and if this ban was enforced, I would need to derez that jukebox.
Take it up with the owner or scripter if you have a problem with a particular jukebox.
Preloading was fudged up when v1.1 rolled around. Currently, it takes a *really* long time to preload music even if its just a gesture, or a 10 second clip. If you don't like preloading/hearing the music from the jukeboxes, mute your audio. By design, it's supposed to ignore all preload/play requests sent to you, saving that bandwith for something else.

==Chris I've had mine muted since 1.1 came out, I still get the incoming sounds And if it were one scripter, I would love to take it up with him/her. However, it seems there's about a hundred of such items out there. I have yet to see one which falls legally within TOS. However, as Dionysus pointed out above, they're crazy. It shouldn't be possible to walk past an item and get 450 incoming sound preloads. While i'm anti-ban as a general practice, these things are a real problem, and it needs to be fixed. Mainly because with sounds, you can't just "look away", they come in no matter what you do. It's bad enough I have to hear the sound clips playing from a full sim away if I turn sound on, but why should I have to download 250 of them at once as well?

I've been trying to count them, but I haven't been successful yet. Alt-4 and Alt-5 don't seem to be giving me the information I need.

The little speaker icon down in the right hand corner will tell you how many streams when you hover your mouse over it.
I'm often at 200+ incoming, and I have sound muted in the preferences. I don't hear them, but they still seem to download.

Oooh, thanks Cailyn I did a little testing and it seems the way the bandwidth is used can't be more than 35-50Kb, when using the default 500Kb setup, no matter how many clips you preload.

I remember disabling my sound once and seeing: INFO: Ignoring xfer sound key id xxxx-xxxxxxxx-xxxxx-xxxx I think this broke with the most recent server/client upgrade.

khamon became deaf after the second day. Linden is way too noisy. i'm standing in the middle of nowhere in the northwest corner of olive and have 202 streams running.
i don't mind being haveing no sound. i generally compute that way. but i sure would like that bandwidth back. i do see that i can custonize the bandwidth devoted to sound/art. what is "art" though. i don't know. somebody tell me.

One persons art is another persons (insert expletive here). Interesting that the SL client has its own theory on what is art and can control it..

- Sounds should not download when muted.
- A better solution to this problem is an option to flush/cancel all the downloading audio streams by clicking on the "speaker" icon.
- A nice feature would be to allow us to selectively "audio mute" certian people (and objects owned by them), but this would probably be a bit more complicated to implement...

As a BAN are you all saying that if ou happen to visit MY HOME i should not be allowed to have music turned on? What next? Ban cars, they hit me all the time? Every time I'm walking around i bump into buildings, Can we ban those? I'm not trying to flame you guys or anything but as we have seen in REAL LIFE... You ban something and it just makes it easier to justify banning other things. I am against baning anything at all but just to show i care, I won't be implementing radios into all my cars, like i was planning ) I can understand this because if i drive torwards you, you dont have a choice but listening. but if the home stereo bothers you, stay away from my house, i should have a choice there. (Then again i dont have a house, I live in a boat) Happy holidays, Corny

I'm against banning as well. Features should be complemented with counter-features, not subtracted.
If audio is becoming a major complaint issue, allow us a quick way to temporarily mute (and stop those streams), especially without having to restart newview.

Most of the music scripts out there only preload the first 9 second clip, then while that's playing it preloads the next 9 second clip. This happens only when the object is clicked.
However some people have made jukebox scripts that preload all the parts of every song on them to whoever comes in range, whether the songs are played or not. It's an insane waste of bandwidth, and I agree that the practice should be banned.
This does not effect 99% of the music objects/scripts out there.

If it seems you can hear music from a great distance, turn up your rolloff factor and distance factor
