Rather than accept the unfortunate reality that they, more often than not, alienate Linden Labs by persisting in the accusations of favoritism instead of accepting the reality that, in most cases, it is more a reward for effort made than reward for popularity, many seem to subscribe to the belief that if only they yell loudly enough, long enough, everyone will magically agree with them that they should reap all the benefits of making that extra effort without actually having to do so.

I don't think that malcontents try to reap any benefits. Instead they try to tear everyone else down. It doesn't work -- in fact its self-destructive. There is no such thing as a happy malcontent.

Remarkable piece of analytical expression. What is even more remarkable is the level of passion for a product (SL) and it's company (Lindens) from some of the users such as the author of the original post. This is reminiscient of other great products that some passionately love and are critical of the producers (Macintosh and Apple comes to mind immeadiately for example).

Cienna,

Excellent post. I guess you weren't kidding when you said you wanted to find something to write about :)

Such is what makes this world so great. Because I see us all as pioneers of a fledgling technology that (many predict) will take off in the next ten years, it's nice to hammer out these things now - even if Second Life is not the first there.

What is that saying that my wife uses to describe what goes on quite a lot...

ahh.. "It's not enough that I succeed - everyone else must fail"... I think that's the mentality you find every now and then too..

I do not think they all start out as malcontents. Indeed, I think quite a few begin as idealists, optimists, or simply eager ignorants (and I mean that not in a derogatory way, but in a literal one).

There are rare few individuals on this forum who are actively, noticeably, and willfully malcontent. One recently was banned, one treads the line even now, and a third vascillates before committing to such an obviously self-destructive activity here.

Three out of the total membership is a remarkably low number. Enough so to be amazing. I think reminding ourselves of this miniscule number should be a regular activity... it is easy to lose perspective at times... this helps maintain it. :)

The one has only ever always tried to save the other two . . . and who all those other two stand for. Which is really all of us.

Considering you have no idea who the 'other two' are, I'd say you just very nicely proved my point about inference. Thanks. :)

I see more shades of gray, I don't think its fair to say there's three bad apples and everyone else is an angel. Besides, even the most nettlesome repeatniks occasionally say something lucid and thought provoking.

To all: it takes all kinds to make a world, even a virtual one. There are abrasive people. There are stupid people. There are complainers, perpetual victims, bullies, paranoids, clowns, prima donnas, bling tards and asshats. Deal with it. Lighten up.

So in other words you're saying that the world don't move to the beat of just one drum, and what might be right for you, might not be right for some.....

I didn't say that at all. I said there are three deliberate malcontents. The rest run the gamut as you so adroitly point out.

Do they? I stop listening once the 10th verse is the same as the first.

I think most people do deal with it. They deal with it by snickering at it, they deal with it by ignoring it, they deal with it by mimicking it satirically, they deal with it by pretending it doesn't exist, or any host of other methods.

Sometimes, they deal with it by setting forth their own opinion to serve as a counter-point to it. (grin)
