I am so angry this evening..i have a cat named spanky who was recently diganosed with a blockage in his urinary tract and needed to be seen right away..now 2 weeks ago i took him into a another vet because my regular vet was closed it happend to have been the same fucking vet i brought my other cat to 3 years ago and basicly told me they didn't know what was wrong with my cat.. it took another vet to tell me my cat had arthrittis in his hips so i had been taking all my cats to the same vet for 2 years .. anyway getting back to the story i call this other vet because he was still not peeing normal and i thought he was blocked again so i brought him in this morning and they did another urinary test on him and sends us home mind you i am now oweing this vet 400$ do this test would be another 40$ + meds.. now she calls me and says he has crystals and an infection *throws hands up* so i ask what do we do now she tells me to give him antibiotics and some other meds ok so i did this now a few hours later my cat is laying on the floor and his lower part is contraction trying to pee...i knew something was not right he was not confortable at all and struggling to pee i was pissed off, so i call the vet and the answering service says the vet was closed and she would have the emergancy vet call me asap.. so i get the call from the emergancy vet and tell her what he is doing.. she says bring him in ASAP  so i ran out of the house with him in carrier and bring him down to the emergancy clinic.. she was going to have to catherize him and would need to spend the night in the hospital.. i am like wtf another 400$ i am gonna have to pay to these people now...what i am wondering is could i make the other vet responsable for this emergancy vist bill?? after all this other vet was aware he was semi blocked.. what do you think?

Awww hon I hope this works out ok for ya and the cat. I would talk to the other vet after this is said and done and see first if they will take responsibility. If not, then I would seek legal.

See if you can get them to take some responsibility. I rather doubt they will though.

I hope your cat survives all this and heals up! He's a cutie!

To help keep this kind of thing from happening, don't use supermarket foods. They all suck horribly. Certain ash content makes urinary crystalization far more likley. And the corn used as a base for most supermarket foods is a big nutritional zero for cats.

I reccomend Innova by Natura pet foods. When I switched my kitties over to it, the difference after just a few days was startling. Like the fountain of youth! And after a couple of weeks... softer coats, more alert and active, less excrement that was less olid, they eat less food (I had to get a smaller bowl!)... I love what this food does for them.

I keep looking at your kitties picture... Way way too cute to have to be suffering this stuff. I sure hope the other vet takes responsibility.

So sorry to hear this Ace - I hope Spanky is ok now? Please let us know. Anyhow, I agree with Leck and Jillian, I'd at least ask them to take some responsibility, perhaps by refunding what they charged you before.

Also - I agree about the store bought food. Look for very low ash content and a good percentage of protein. It will help prevent a reoccurance.

Good luck sweetie - /hugs.

i can totally sympathize with you aces......i have a $1000 (& damn that's canadian...ouch!!!!!) urinary tract blockage kitty of my own.

the vet has him on special medicated food specifically designed for this problem. kibble twice a day & canned once a day for the moisture content....it's supposed to help.

once a cat has had this problem, proper veterinary diet is the key to see that no more blockages occur. store bought pet foods are out of whack in their concentrations of the ingredients that cause & also deter this problem.

Good to hear that you can get him tonight - One thing I forgot to mention that my vet told me: The highest incidence of FUS (Feline Urological Syndrome) occurs in late winter and early spring after several months of decreased physical activity. (Wonder if they make little kitty tread mills)?

Also I seem to remember being told that food too high in magnesium exacerbated the condition. Essentially, not drinking enough water, a diet high in magnesium or other minerals and too much acidity or alkalinity of the urine and last but not least stress.

I had mine at the vets yesterday morning. This is my "free" rescue (dumpster diving) kittie who has now cost me well over $3,000.

He was apparently being the neighborhood "Asscat" yesterday morning and got into a fight with Big Red (the neighbors orange tabby), who chased him into the cat door and bit his ass just as he began to clear the door. It was a pretty nasty bite.

To top that off, apparently he looked the wrong way at his sister and for what appeared to be no reason at all, she started to beat the crap out of him (she weighs about 5 lbs more than he does). This happened like five minutes after Big Red bit him. All I can figure is that he did SOMETHING to piss them off because usually they all play well together.

So.... One shaved butt, two stiches, an antibiotic shot, a pill that I have to shove down his throat for a week and $180 dollars later, he's laying on his back on the sofa with the remote in his paw.

I am so ashamed.... :o I am a slave to my cat.

Your digital camera software may include "retouching"-type software, which will allow you to resize/rescale/resample the image. Do a little reading in the online help or wherever to help figure out the best settings for quality when resizing.

Or you may have Microsoft Photo Editor on your system somewhere, or PSP/PS can do resizing as well.

Sorry to hear about your vet troubles, Aces.

Vets are similar to doctors and dentists... some know what they're doing, others are corrupt and/or incompetent.

Spanky is luck to have an owner who cares about him to take him to the vet and pay his medical expenses. In my parents generation (or at least my family) would hessitate to take an ailing pet to the vet unless it seemed near death, and even then it was usually to have the animal euthanized. I don't think people understood that higher animals (very probably) are conscious creatures, not flesh robots.
I get teased because I've sank major dough into vet care for one of my cockatiels. When he broke his beak, they encouraged me to "just put him to sleep and get another one... who spends that kind of money on a bird". How could I? He trusted me. Or it sure seemed like he trusted me. BTW, eight years after his accident he's still going strong.

Here are my two, "Asscat" is the black one. The tabby is only is sister by adoption. When we got her, he was so pissed that he took her for a walk and then ditched her but to his surprise, she found her way back. He finally gave up trying to convince us to get rid of her so he taught her how to climb trees and eventually they bonded.

I would like to take this opportunity to remind pet owners to get pet insurance. It sounds silly, but trust me, it saves you money in the long run, should anything go wrong with your pet's health.

Wow - Spooky and Picasso could be long lost brothers.

Since you have to return him to the vet you are not too happy with, I'd really grill them about the follow up and medication needed to prevent infection from the cathater and anything else needed for Spanky when you bring him home.

If where you are taking him now does not call you with an update, I think I'd also call and bug them pretty regularly.

When I first moved to Florida, I had two cocker spaniels. I had to take Max (the male spaniel) to the vet and the first place I went to, they asked me to leave and come back later. When I returned, Max just howled. He hated it there. They'd put him into a cage all day after doin about an hours examination on him. At that point, I just got a bad feeling - they also charged a lot more than other places I later found out.

I just never had a good feeling about the place and vowed never to go back.

The vet I found next absolutely LOVED my dogs and cats. He always lets me accompany them, even for weighing and xrays. He explains all the pros and cons and when he does feel that an animal is suffering he dosen't prolong it to make money either. He and his wife aren't rich but as he says, they have everything that they need.

He is such a caring vet that one day when a women who was breeding australian shepards came in to have a puppy put down because it's bite was off, he absolutely flipped out on her, refused to put the puppy down for a cosmetic issue and kept the puppy, which he still has 6 years later.

He and his wife now have 6 dogs and 4 or 5 cats, all rescued, 2 of the cats roam the office freely all day and 1 of the dogs he brings to work with him (the above mentioned shepard). He also has a grey parrot at the office that someone abandoned and takes rescued iguanas, snakes, raccoons and possums (all of which I have brought to him at one time or another). His wife runs the animal rescue in my area. When I see people this caring about animals, I know I can trust them with mine. :)

Please keep us updated on Spankey's progress, poor little guy.

Pls, take me seriously when i say this.. but your cat needs a sex change..

My cat suffered for many years missdiagnosed then properly diagnosed with blockages and crystals thatt turned into stones which then scratched his bladder which lead to infection which lead to more crystals and blockages.. it was a nightmare and poor puss puss was in so much pain.. ..

finally after many many infections. and blockages.. 2 bladder surgeries to clean out/scrape his bladder clean. many many anitbotics and a miserable cat.. i found a great vet which performed a "sex change" i forget the medical term.. in any case his bladder was once again cleaned out.. his urethra was enlarged so that puss puss could pass his crystals and stones.. no more infection. no more blockages.. and my 14 year old cat acts like a kitten!.. hes a whole new cat.. he has been almost 3 years infection and blockage free.... he continues on a good prescription diet too.

if diet alone doesnt workfor you.. look into this surgical procedure.. he will have a much happier life..

huggs sis.. kisses to kitty

ps im sure your pissed bout the bills id be too.. at the least they would hear from me !!
