From the G4TV website:
Join us tonight on G4TV, when Phillip Rosendale, CEO of Linden Labs, shows off new features from version 1.6 of their immersive MMORPG, Second Life. In this episode Phillip will demonstrate the much-revered prim and avatar ghosting feature and how it relates to the new features in version 1.6.
"We are the first online game, where players can actually stream movies from servers directly to ghosted prims in world. We feel that this will allow for a greater level of immersion, improving upon the preexisting features such as talking to an avatar for several minutes before realizing that they're ghosted. Additionally, we have added new editing tools that will allow you to measure on a grid exactly where your prims have ghosted. We're definitely breaking new ground here.
"I'm also delighted to announce that we've added new vehicle physics that will enhance the user experience, while preserving features such as the sim-boundary vehicle crash. Users will be able to create hovering vehicles which rise smoothly over rough terrain at high speeds right up until a sim boundary, where it will stop in its tracks.
"Finally, we've significantly reduced log-in time. While analyzing the game-playing habits of SLers, we realized that they enjoy logging in and out several times in a short period of time while playing. We are excited to deliver a faster log-in time so users can maximize their repeated relog enjoyment."

AHA!
I thought it seemed faster to log in. I had assumed that was because there are a lot fewer players in the test grid.

I'm assuming that faster logins are related to the streaming inventory feature. Players with larger inventories will probably notice this the most, since they were affected the most by downloading inventory at startup.

Where abouts is this on the G4TV site? I mean, it sounds like a piss-take obviously, but have you made up the reference to G4TV?

Yep... downloading my inventory was a huge chunk of time. Most of the items are things which I want to keep, but which I don't use every day. It's a waste of resources to download them every time I log in, since I only use these things once or twice a month. Though I definitely need to clean up a bit, this at least removes a small bit of irritation at log-in.

From: Artillo Fredericks it's obviously a JOKE :: shakes head :: Yeah, but I'm hoping it's actually on the G4TV site so that maybe it galvanizes the Lindens to actually do something about the issues. Shame if it's not. A good bit of bad press may do wonders to get them back on-track with bug fixing, rather than the "tinkering around the edges" bug fixes they've done in 1.6.

i can't find this info either.. i checked News, Schedules, Forums.. and tried using the Search feature. got nothing (recent).
is this for tonight's show? do you have a link to this info?
and last but not least, please tell me there's at least one or two SLers who'll be callers! how better to further illustrate SL than to let the general populace hear one of us talking to Philip?
..just don't complain about ratings on the air! LOL...

in that case...
03-04-2005 08:42
that was hilarious! believable.. to a degree. i like the humorous angle of Philip talking about the ghosting "feature". ...still chuckling... of course, it would be awesome if they DID have an episode focused on LL/SL/Philip!!! hmm, maybe i should suggest it on the G4TV forums?

I noticed the LAG I got from opeing my inventory for a good two or three minutes. Thats much longer than it took to log in....

LOL I was so used to Linden Doublespeak I actually thought that was a real post. I don't get web sarcasm usually... The Onion is completely lost on me, for example. Then again, I didn't get Napolean Dynomite either. Maybe I'm just broken --Jack Lambert

what a great post. it so well mimics philip's rhetoric that i only realized it was a joke while reading the last paragraph. i had to explain the whole thing to jarod. he was browsing to g4 to read the whole interview. what makes it all so confusing is that we have to assume that ll do actually talk about these things. a transcript of the meeting in which they decided to implement chat bubbles must read like a farce. someone that works at ll actually thought, and convinced enough others, that it was a good idea. a good idea for whom? what eighteen-and-older audience were they targeting? granted, there are some reasonable explainations. they may be using the current grid as a testing ground for features that they want to implement in the teen grid. they may also be trying to cause a social revolt to gain some press. articles about virtual picket lines during the tax revolution attracted a whole lot of curious people who opened accounts and decided to stay for a while. the list goes on; but you all can think so i won't bore you with it. i agree that we probably log in faster in 1.6 because inventory lists are transfered on demand. this was a huge mistake. the vastly wasted resources are consumed by our bloated inventories. anything ll does to accomodate us perpetually storing limitless numbers of items is just plain foolish. anything they do to encourage, or better yet force, us to keep our inventory lists reasonably trim is smart. before y'all panic, let me say that there are several things they can do to allow us to better manage our inventory without having to throw things away e.g. the ability to export and store items locally. Thanks for the link Khamon, I googled for it before my first reply as it's not something we get in the UK. I was saying I couldn't find the article/post/whatever on there and now I know why. I thought it was a parody but I presumed it had actually come from that site. Ho hum.

Be glad ya don't get it, Moopf...before Comcast bought out TechTV and merged their ill-concieved G4 gaming network with it, it was a great channel to watch. Since acquiring it last year, they've systematicly cut most of the good TechTV content/staff/personalities and recently dropped the "TechTV" from their name a few weeks ago in order to stop pretending to have any sembelence to that departed source of good, geeky fun and usefull computer/gadget knowledge. I'm down to two shows on that channel that I'll watch willingly, compared to when I could watch TechTV all day given the chance. Though I might make an exception if there was actualy a Second Life feature on the channel (just to bring it back on topic).

I am very disappointed by this thread.

Ulrika, your parody suggests that the choice of what to work on reflected in 1.6 is in some way imperfect. These forums are not intended for any sort of criticism or expression of disapproval of the Second Life staff's work in any way or form. Shame on you for doing something other than heaping praise on the senstive programming geniuses at Linden Lab. Shame also on the respondents who did something other than critique Ulrika's writing style and attack her for having a bad attitude. ------------------ Seriously, I had already been dreading having ghosted dancing badger videos. Very nice post Ulrika.

A few years ago, I was a big fan of shows like The Screen Savers on TechTV. I don't know if Philip and Leo Laporte have ever met, but I'd imagine there'd be a great social dynamic if you're familiar with both their styles of conversation. I was disappointed after the merger with G4 and how some of my favorite personalities were fired.

From: Torley Torgeson I don't know if Philip and Leo Laporte have ever met, but I'd imagine there'd be a great social dynamic if you're familiar with both their styles of conversation. Leo Laporte was, at one point, a "There" resident and did a Screen Savers feature on it. I suppose it wouldn't be hard for someone to post on his forums at leoville.com and attempt to get him hooked on SL. >:) (And believe me, I've been sorely tempted, but I don't have a forum acount there). I gave up on The Screen Savers after G4 did it sorta-ok for a few months with Alex, the new host...then they fired Alex, along with Dan, Yoshi and a lot of behind the scenes people at the same time they fired the entire production staff and cast of Unscrewed. Kevin and Sarah are still there but according to half-dropped hints on their personal blogs, not always happy about it. (Unfortunately there's this thing called a contract...)

Thanks for the background, Elle. *sighs* Kevin and Sarah always struck me as such a cute couple, and my ol' fave Morgan Webb (whatever happened to her? Haven't kept up to date). Sad.

I miss TechTV a lot. Max Headroom re-runs rocked. They actually did a news story on my last company which was featured because of the work we were doing with online charter schools. Peter Barnes was a nice guy and bought us pizza for lunch.
