Many moons ago when SL was young and BIG RED rulled Taber and Welsh I had a group of friends over.

I had built a Beholder at the time and Big Red was in her fashion bronze Chain and Collar connected to the Tackle block on a 30 meter tall tower.

Mind you I had Absolutely no scripting abilities other than I had just learned to drop a Follow me script in an object.

I was unfamilure with Physical and Temp on Rez or any of those features about scripts and prims.

Well my friend were showing off their new toys they picked up at Skeedalee Skidoo's place back then.

I pulled out My beholder with 3 eye stalks and 4 eyeballs. One of my friends said "Hey Shade why dont you script that thing to follow you" I said I tried to but it keeps falling to the ground when I set the script in it and let it go."

needless to say one of them mentioned hey try to put that remote control car script you have in it.

I wasnt entirely sure about all this but I proceeded to take the little remote control car I had apart and looked at the scripts to move them over to the beholder.

Now to Set the Scene there were 5 of us on top of the tower that Big Red was chained too. I had the beholder in edit floating in the center of the tower.

People were standing and sitting all around this chatting while I was putting the scripts in.

I announced to my friends..."Here Goes" I release the Beholder from edit and I kid you not the damn thing exploded.

Knocked two of my friends off the tower to land on Big Reds back.

The Main body of the Beholder fell right there on the tower top and rested against one of the parapit stones.

The eye at the time was made of a Rubber material and bounced gently off the top down to the ground to roll into the water across the sim line.

now the other parts..the stalks and eye lids and stuff were all airborne not that we knew at the time. But found out when we went down to the ground looking for the parts as it started raining eyeballs.

Thats my first Experience with any form of scripts...Anyone else got any good ones??

Shadow.

PS that was May of 2003.

Oooh fun thread :D

First time scripting, I made the windows of my Empire State Building in hawthorne go from dark tinting (by day) to clear (at night). That project went swimmingly and Aimee knew she had a long and lucrative career in scripting ahead of her.

Second time scripting I made a fun house where physical balls were rezzed into a "fun" room, bounced around, and deleted themselves at the same rate. Though they didn't delete themselves. The room kept filling up until there wasn't anything even remotely "fun" about it. Hawthorne Crashed. Took the Lindens a few hours to isolate the massive problems I created and restore the sim.

I make clothes now.

My first time...
02-02-2005 11:16
I learned in classes... so I avoided most huge first mistakes.

The first script I made and sold was door that only opened at it's owner's touch.

Mind you.. that's my first SCRIPTING as in WRITING experience.

There there was the time I dragged a "simple plane" script into a 2x4 and had 2 friends get on it.

Wish I had pics of the 3 of us on a flying board landing upside down.

I made a donation tracking script, but I kept getting the permissions wrong and the child/parent prim thing really confused me for a while. It was great fun though. You could rez the object, and it would keep track of who paid it, and tell the list to the owner.
I'm working that one up to a generic betting system now.

The next one was a flight script for my "Crappy Rocket Pack". I could go hella fast, but everytime I'd cross a sim border, I'd lose all attachments, including the rocket pack, and have to relog :p

LSL is fun.

I made an elevator for for a friends store that had 3 levels....all was going well but the ride was a little rough....so I tweaked it a little and the thing started shaking furiously and exploded.. Damnb thing shot parts over 2 sims and I got abuse reported because one of the buttons hit someone in the head :D

My earliest scripting was mostly expiriments with existing scripts written by others. I'd change functions and parameters to see what would happen.

These were pre-LSL wiki days and the then-current scripting guide baffled me. I printed the entire thing and studied it, and while I understood parts of it, I couldn't incorperate the info into an actual working script.

the first all original script i ever made was for an attachment to let me rez a safe about 2 meters over someone's head. :D

i don't remember what my very first scripting experience of any kind that i did was. probably putting a pose script in a chair.

I took the door script out of a generic Linden freebie house door, and put it in a trapdoor in the middle of my deck, so you could walk up the slope underneath, up through the trapdoor and onto the deck.

However, I found it was really hard with camera angles to be able to click on the trapdoor when approaching it from below. So I took the plunge, and modified the script so that it sensed any avatar collision from below, opened automatically and announced the person coming through!

I wonder how many visitors I had with headaches from bumping their heads....

i built a raffle pole for tech talk events to give away the prize money. on the first go around, the code that was supposed to delete a winner's name from the registration list didn't work so the same person won three times in a row.

the next round, after the code was "fixed," the stupid thing deleted the entire list, so that everybody had to reregister, every time a winner was chosen.

i didn't script much for a few weeks after that.

I tried building a jet plane as my first project (after hours of script studying). The best part about it was i tried to mount rockets to the tips of the wings. well the first problem with the test flight was i had no control over the virtical rotaion(which i still havnt figured out), second was i had no friction on the x axis and no reverse, third was i had the speed set to high, and the final problem was for some reason the rocket script linked with the jet,( i dont know how it still flew) but i took off into the air, i slowly started to turn down back into the ground, and i accedently landed in a danger area, the plane blew up and killed me. (it might have just been the rocket i had mounted on the front that blew up but either way i was way out of my league on it and i screwed up royaly) I discarded the whole project and didnt do much more scripting after that.

Shadow, that story made me laugh the hardest I have in 5 days.

My first script was a door script that ultimately made me learn the perils of listens.

Sigh.. my millenium falcon in the pre vehicle script command days. Seriously proud of myself for making a 1/2 scale falcon out of 30 prims, i proceeded to hack together a flying script from bits of other scripts people had given me. Needless to say, I was even more proud when I figured I had finished said script (that I understood maybe a quarter of) and copied it into the doomed ship.

I sat in the cockpit, and it said 'Hello avatar! Millenium Falcon ready!'...

I pushed pgUp, and it rose into the air jerkily...

I rotated to the left to get a clear path ahead (thinking 'I must make this bank when it turns sometime')...

I pushed the cursor up key... and leapt forward at incredible speed, crossed Clementina in a few seconds, then the screen went black and I was logged out.

I never found the millenium falcon again, and never rezzed the scripted version from my inventory again! :D

Aimee! I'm glad I'm not the only one who crashed a sim with a physical bouncy ball auto rezzer!!! I also crashed a sim with that unspeakable technology :)

My first script was, gee I don't remember, maybe it was that old phone experiment I made ages ago?
Of course, I started out modding other people's scripts. Like Philip Linden's mixmaster from the old disco :)

The very first script i tried to edit was that of the "Black Streak Bike Improved".
See I didn't like how it handled and knowing C & Java the syntax wasn't an issue so I dived in.
I totaly broke it. Born out of this was the "Flying Black Streak Bike Improved". I haven't studied what I did to it but back in the end of 1.2 and early 1.3 there was this bug in land vehicals that when you went backwords you could actualy fly. It was very fun to have it motorcycle fly backwords :D . But they fixed that bug :( .

I still use the bike but with a few modifications. Lower friction, looser turning. Just wish it could fly like it did before they broke it

My first script that wasn't a modification of a linden freebie ended up crashing a sim.

I leave the "good or bad" determination up to you.

My first BIG scripting experience was a joint project ( I can't remember the dude's name, but he quit during Beta.. maybe Christopher Omega or James Miller will remember him.). It was a pre-vehicle code car, that had friction, an accel curve, etc. Of course, it got ganked by a CERTAIN NAMELESS CARSALEMAN who proceeded to make a fortune off of it. I never saw a damned dime from it.

My first was, hmm, a modification of a transparency script I think. Either that or setting parameters in a teleport script...

Since then all sorts of things, some ugly, some nice, some still in need of tweaking. I've just done my first huge multi-prim, multi-script link-messaging and data shoving script, successfully at long last!

I'm just about to do my second bit of custom scripting for hard cash too!

My most memorable early scripting effort (I don't honestly remember the first thing I ever did), was trying to make my friend Silv's full-scale Recognizer (from TRON) into a working hover vehicle. I was of course working off of a pre-existing, somewhat flakey helicopter script, but after a bit of tweaking, one could board it and actually hover!

However, upon trying to actually fly the thing, it responded with an uncomfortable amount of veracity to the actual film: as it flew, the component pieces would, increasingly rapidly, fly off of it! Eventually, one would end up sitting on a single prim, a little dazed, with bright red Recognizer bits scattered across several sims. :)

I gave up trying to script after my third visit to the scripting class, and three failed attempts to make a prim that said, 'Hello, avatar!'. Even with the instructions right in front of me.

awww Dev *hugs!* :D (ANY excuse to hug Teh Cherub)

I took a scripting class and learned the "hello avatar" thingy.

It was so cool.

So I figure I'm ready to rock n roll. I want to make a flying something or other.

I get free hover script from a freebie bundle and tinker with it......

It goes inside this contraption I made called Pink Death

(now THIS is scary, because at the time I had like ONE building class under my belt as well)

lets just say Pink Death is aptly named. I give the vehicle out free to those folks who are feeling suicidal - or who just like the color pink ;)

(OH nearly forgot: it mostly "runs" by feeding off the life force of passengers so you'll need 1-4 ppls to go with you into the great beyond)

The first script I made from scratch were buttons for Hank Ramos' free elevator script. Using Listens and Says on non chat channels..

I tried to adapt it with shouting so you could have elevators with buttons that went higher than 100m.. But I overlooked the fact that if they were all listening for and saying the same thing, it would break (stupid I know)..

That almost crashed Tethys ;-)
