From: Eggy Lippmann Here's a conspiracy theory. MAYBE, just MAYBE, Pete didn't know that temp-on-rez objects couldn't be returned! Amazing concept isn't it! Well, at least *I* certainly didn't. And MAYBE, just MAYBE, he made those prims temp-on-rez out of COURTESY to the land owners and their prim limit! The shock! The horror! Eggy, you are smarter than this. Being able to return them or not doesnt amount to a hill of beans if a new one shows up every 15 - 45 secs. Land owners should thank Pete for giving them a 30 second rest between the continous 24/7 flow of these objects over their land. Maybe Pete should thank THEM for paying $$$ to keep those sims running since his objects are in almost all public sims in which most of them he owns no land or pays no rent of any kind.

From: Buster Peel Nobody should be faulting Pete here. Pete has broken no rules. Actually he (and his accomplices) did: Point 5.1 of the TOS, paragraph V

LL has implicitly shown support for devices like this in the past. Empirically I can say that they believe it is clever, and amusing.
I doubt we'll see any change in rules, ever, that address, in verbage, anything that has to do with land scanners. Philip has expressed that it is too much of a slippery slope.
He said that they'd rather add tools than rules: While I agree with this, the tools are slow in coming. The rules, are quick to be added, but slow and uneven in enforcement.
The outcome will likely be the following: we will have to tolerate Pete's objects until someone develops an object or script to combat them, (using resources further), or LL, several versions down the road, implements a tool to take care of it.
We will not see LL make a value judgement, not even on Eltee's points of behavior, even if such a device would be considered (by most sane people) universally malicious.
Here, we cue the people who will say 'might makes right', and with quips that this is the 'wild west' and 'anything goes'.
Pete has won this battle for the time being.

I am not amused. And with me many other residents. From: someone Pete has won this battle for the time being. It's still VERY early to say this. TOS: Article 5.1, paragraph V We will see, the battle is still in it's early stages.

From: Reitsuki Kojima You can find fault with a person for reasons other than obeying the letter of the law. I didn't say you can't, I said you shouldn't. Just my opinion, of course.

Once again, Eggy, you're defending behavior on false speculation. I know for a fact that Pete did know this. Why? Because of Flipper's story from months ago. Originally they weren't temp-on-rez, then Flipper had set his land to auto-return to get rid of them. After Pete's inventory was flooded and a deluge of IMs, Pete re-scripted the scanners to exclude Indigo. He also made them temp-on-rez. So Pete knew very well what would happen. Pete is also an experienced player who knows most of the ins and outs of SL. That's twice you've put out speculation highly favorable to Pete without checking your facts, which were available in the thread.

From: Philip Linden Broadly, we need to have systems that fairly allocate resources in a sim to the landowners that are there. Certainly it is NOT ok to 'borrow' sim resources without asking - but what is the right policy or technology to enforce this? Thought welcome. . A prim is a prim is a prim, whether it is charged to us as a land owner or charged to Gov. Linden. It takes resources. Owing to the fact, temp_on_rez objects are charged to the Governor, that means us a whole. I think Philip is acutely aware of the situation, but is pondering ways to resolving it. From: Alan Palmerstone I am wondering if there is any way we could ban any objects that don't have AGENT's attached to them. This would allow a flying vehicle to pass, but not a cube of unknown intent. I agree with Alan here too. While temp_on_rez may be used on bullets, or particle generators etc, the owner is easily identifiable and abuses of these objects is well defined within the TOS. Simply because they are at 400m and not in your face, should not disqualify them from the rules. Rezzing objects at an "absentee level" especially across sim boundaries need not be compared to aircraft usage and ones right of way.

2 primitive objects per rez X 15 hops = 30 per/sim/cycle. Therefore 30 per/sim/cycles every 15 seconds = 120 prims/sim/min. Therefore 120 prims/sim/min x 24 = 2880prims/sim/day Therefore 2880 prims/sim/day x 500 = 1, 440,000 prims/day approx. grid wide.
Honestly, I dont think someone should be entitled to use this many prims, over our land for no good reason. I scarely doubt that even the most prolific builder in SL would generate this many in a lifetime.
