Seriously, grid went down unnanounced, bug? Grid testing for preview?

I think it went down around this same time yesterday, anyone else notice this?

*pokes the grid monkey*

Edit: To fix mistake pointed out by eltee... tommorow could happen too!

Ahhh....Ahhhh....

/me runs around in a crazed, animated state.

Somewhere, deep in the metropolis of San Francisco, a weary and bloodshoot eyed technician is panicing right now in the bowels of Linden Lab...

It's an anti-UK conspiracy. They put the previews up at a time when we're in bed and kill the main grid while we're awake...

I was wondering, does this happen a lot - is SL not very stable?

Thanks

Meerha

PS I'm in the UK too - does it always go down in our time then?

It's only when there are too many troublesome English online. The Lindens have an alarm set...

Oz, I love the way you spell american with a small a.. ;)

It happens remarkably infrequently for something as ambitious as SecondLife.

There have been some major lag problems of the past 2 days, however. This is pure guesswork, but I believe multiple sims were coming up on the same server, instead of each sim taking their own server (this might be related to a change put into place for the VOID sims, which share a server due to the fact they don't need to support primitives or scripts). We got this problem fixed in Transylvania last night (Thanks Lindens!) and this may be related to fixing the same problem which existed throughout several sims.

Again, this is guesswork just from what I found out last night... and by NO MEANS guaranteed to be 100% correct. :-)

Regards,

-Flip

hmm - well I don't know if LL has staff on round the clock. If not, I assume that's why it happens during our time.

Thanks for explaining.

Well theres alot of small things about me! Er...

The grid goes down at all sorts of times, mornings are usualy the roughest when theres only one person on call for it to handle everything. It usualy doesn't last too long.

Usualy on major upgrades however SL will go down in "early morning" and sometimes last till "early afternoon" or "afternoon itself", so UKers and others on that schedual do get the short end there, however! If major releases are released ontime and while others at are work, you could get first shot at a new client. However! These are often buggy also, so you get the first features... and first bugs. :P

I'm in Japan right now (with a typhoon raging outside), and only get to play for an hour or 2 in the evening (if I'm lucky, the work hours are insane here) and unfortunately there goes the grid again....

Oh well, I can spend my time reading all these forum messages instead :-)

Eh guys, it ain't that bad. Sure once in a blue moon, we get a little rash of problems. Heck, even Phillip has indicated his concern over the amount of downtime in the recent past.

Yes, the brits did get the short end of the stick. That may be a suggestion for LL in the future. Instead of scheduling all upgrades according to PST, and the time they deem as quiet time, rotate it a little bit. While some may find this annoying, I'd only find it fair to our international players. Heck, there's been many of days where I decided to play hookie from the day job, and get the message, "SL is down for maintenance" part way through the morning.

Mind you, I can't blame them if they want to ensure it doesn't happen during primetime for EST to PST time, as thats the busiest, but, pushing it a little later in the morning (a few hours) or earlier may not hurt. Infact, it may make a bunch of of our UK friends happy. Last I looked, that crowd of englishmen and women (lol, can't blame them for being english ;) ) has grown quit substantially.

But back to my original point, for the most part SL, is pretty stable. Sure we've had a recent rash of bugs, and downtimes, but on the most part, SL has been great. I used to be employed by a dot bomb err, I mean a dot com, and needless to say, without spending whack loads of cash (oracle clusters, FC storage arrays and the like costs a ton. A basic pair of oracle servers in clustered configs cost $114,000 last I looked), outages sometimes occur. Trust me, I know, spent many a night in a datacenter in shorts for several hours at a time rebuilding, restoring and fixing file servers and the likes.

Peace out.

I'm just more curious if it was down at the same time yesterday, if its a schedualed un-announced downtime, or a bug that happens at the same time every morning? :P

And Trimda I believe you have my stapler.
