...one of sincere faith in his or her beliefs is not to be swayed in them by argument or discussion.

Yes, but there's nothing wrong with sharing information and ideas. Unfortunately, when the topic is religion, that seems to be very difficult for most people.

The name of the religion you spoke of is in fact the Baha'i. The founder's name is Siyyid' Ali-Muhammad, an Iranian who founded the faith in the early 1800's. Muslims regard it as an Islamic apostasy, but the Baha'i regard themselves as the newest world religion.

Nice post, btw. Exactly the sort of thing to counteract the parochialism these sorts of discussions bring out. Even those who profess to be non-Christian sometimes insist on using the western Christian idiom.

Precisely why I haven't participated much in the "discussion," which already threatens the "I'm right -- you're wrong" tone. ;) I try not to put value judgments on others' beliefs. Their actions -- that's often another story.

Thanks for the refresher on Baha'i. A friend introduced me to it a little more than a year ago; I would have found it quite compelling ten years prior, having been in a very similar belief phase (i.e. that all religions, all Gods, were facets of a single one).

I don't submit to tyranny. Not even from "supreme beings" If you can't get a golden ticket to the afterlife without believing, and the god you're supposed to believe in can't be bothered to prove its existence in an unambiguous way, and failure to play along results in an eternity of pain and torment, then God is clearly a sadistic prick. I won't bow down and kiss the ass of a beast like that no matter what the consequences are. ;)

I have to say, I have a lot of respect for someone who has the courage to come right out and say that. I agree wholeheartedly. If there is a God, and he really is that way, I'll FIND a way to kill him. Nobody that reprehensible gets to rule the universe on my watch, damnit! :)
