I agree. Town halls are pretty much the same thing every few months these days. The audio broadcast let people hear just how genuine and wide-eyed Philip actually is about the whole thing that just doesn't come across in text. Its refreshing, and instead of people getting pissed off by town halls, they actually come away excited, and, typically feeling good... and even joking.
I always felt really bad for Haney, and now Jeska, for having to be IM bitch during townhalls. It must be hellish:
OMG U NOT ASK MY Q??!~!!!!?!!!11!!!!111onehundredeleventhousandonehundredeleven!!11!!one11
Time to make the radio retransmitted listen on a private channel (maybe 333?) for questions, and limit it to one per person and have 'em queued from the web or somewhere external!
Regards,
-Flip

You guys also missed the people shouting at the Lindens from the full-sim border. One guy, I think his name was Renard or Retard or something, was actually calling Philip out to come and face him like a man. That was a hoot! Poor Philip.

From: Beryl Greenacre What I think would make these town halls feel more accessible and "authentic" would be to have Philip do a voice broadcast while he answers questions (like he did last summer on the one-year anniversary of SL graduating from beta). Jeska could IM Philip the questions to answer, Philip could read the question, then give his answer, and things would go faster and more smoothly. He also wouldn't have more than one question to deal with at a time, as he seemed to last night.. I agree! That voice broadcast was so very cool and so much more exciting or emotional. Philips enthusiasm and humor really came through. And it was simple to stream it to your plot.

Thats it - I'm passing the big 'P' a Yokozuna and a Whizzer... next time he can fart on thier heads then piss on their faces. Siggy. (And there are some out there that think I'm kidding )

I'd have been more than happy to either wait for Phillip to get back from vacation, or have one of the many other lindens who are knowlegeable about the big pic do the town hall. I'd be interested to know what prompted them to do this while he was away from the resources he really needed.
Thisis the first time I've ever felt like we got thrown a bone. Usually I come away feeling pretty informed even if not nessesarily happy with what I heard. *shrug*

I don't understand why there were so many questions about the teen grid. Why the fascination with it? There are more immediate concerns for the main grid.

I guess the point was to try and pacify folks in the wake of the event calendar changes. If so, it was a total bust. I was shocked that Philip said he was unaware of any "fallout" due to those changes. My first thought was that he was using that excuse to duck having to provide a real answer. If not, then the man needs to get briefed on high-profile issues before fielding questions.
The only thing that made the event worth my time was the Linden or two who dropped by our repeater and gave us decent answers to some questions. From the reports I've read, being in the live audience sucks. Maybe they should start pre-screening the audience like politicians do now. "Are you wearing any scripted attachments? Did you vote for Havok2? Are you able to act like an adult for an hour?"
I was also disappointed that Philip does not understand the difference between preview grid testing and live usability testing. I guess that question was more appropriate for Andrew or Cory. Too bad they are too busy getting us Havok2 to do a town hall.

I think part of the reason they did the change was because they want to force people to buy more land.
Each 512 parcel can only hold 3 events. Before it was unlimited. So 9.99 gets you 3 events per day. 14.99 gets you 6 events per day, and so on.
I not would be suprised to see that this goes down to 1 event per day at sometime in the future.
And after all, you do have to admit, it's not like the event calendar really took a hit from this.

I just think...that if so many of you don't agree with second life's changes, why do you still play??? Surely if you didn't like it, you woulda left.....
And so what teen grid opens and bla bla bla, how many of you are really gonna cancel your account??? Sorry but its gonna take alot more than this petty bullshit to get my ass out of second life.

Honestly... you're going to want to hold more than 3 events per day on a 512m plot?
Event 1: "Buy my stuff" Event 2: "No, really, buy my stuff" Event 3: "PLEASE buy my stuff" Event 4: "Raffleball raffling 2L every 30 minutes while you buy my stuff!" Event 5: "Come gamble away your money at the slot machine that takes up all my prims on my land in between transactions of buying my stuff" Event 6: "See how many people can fit on a 512m plot contest... come break the record of 10 people! 10L reward while you buy my stuff" Event 7: "Com get nekkie and pay for my cyber while buying my stuff" Event 8: "Chat about important political issues ... and buy my stuff" Event 9: "Did I mention to buy my stuff?" ... etc ...
Seriously... I doubt very much that anyone could host more than 3 events per day on a 512m plot of land

Nice to listen....
04-22-2005 05:06
From: David Valentino I agree that it is wonderful that LL, and the CEO, Philip, do take the time to communicate with us and to share thoughts and plans and ideas. (snipped...if you'll pardon the expression) But overall, I think it was ok. Nice to gather and listen, as well as have the chance to ask questions, and the Lindens at pathfinder's place (at one point or another: Blue, Adam, Deana, Ian, Uncle and Pathfinder) were all very nice and seemed genuinely interested in hearing what folks had to say. Yeah but, yeah but.... First of all it is not a boon getting to speak to the CEO of the organisation that we are all investing time and money in. I may not spend much money now, but I sure as hell devote an awful lot of my spare time to SL. I deserve to have my voice heard, and to get to hear what the company is doing with my investment . Second of all...I am sure it was great for those people in the US who were up and about at 7pm...for those of us in Europe where it was 3am or 4am depending upon location it was irritating in the extreme. If ever there was a way of making us feel like second class citizens of SL's empire, this was it. Cali

Part of the design was to have a growing number of Linden-owned public venues available, and that has now been implemented, along with the re-introduction of private estate access lists allowing you to post events there. The announcement is here: /3/05/42647/1.html#post462190 Again, I offer my apologies for the delay in introducing these. The good news is, we are certainly still open to suggestions and changes, so keep up the communication with us! Thanks, Jeff There you are - conspiracy disproved. Anyway I'm a basic and I can still post events - just not at anywhere I'd like to.

Two points:
As CEO of the company that creates this kind of product (SL), Philip Linden is often forced to act like a politician. Part of the job, whether anyone likes it or not.
and
Who the hell goes vacationing in San Diego? Send the poor guy to Easter Island, McMurdo Sound, or the Ruwenzori Mountains, let him relax for a week, and then I guarantee we'll get good answers.

I think a major problem lies in trying to look at jello and treat it if it were concrete. To do so would be deceptive, to not do it would seem noncommittal and openended. Of the two, I prefer the latter. Constructive criticism of the sort is welcome, I'm sure, because that's how the community gets ideas to LL and we can all look at things from a new perspective together.
The future is quite flexible.

I believe Philip grew up in the San Diego area (this was mentioned in a recent article about Philip and LL). I'm actually envious, since San Diego is a very nice city; you should see the miniscule backwater towns where I have to go to visit family.

At the same time you all were there.. many others like myself were logged out.. trying to login and had the error.. "Your computer clock is wrong" We wasted a long time trying to login into the game... Not a change to even get close to Phillip's Town Meeting.. Anyway, thanks for the post and the log of his chat... it helps to read... even thou like some of you mentioned Phillip sounded tired and tired of listening to the same old thing.. including the same questions of the teen grid.... I wish he would of mention more about event changes, rate changes, inventory changes, mentors, event salary and more things that really affect the game... I really wanted to hear more about the rates and nobody asked...
