How to get a better shape?

Sorry to clutter up the General forum but I can't find a better place to put this.

I have seen many fine skins for sale, but none of them look right on my shape. And no matter how I tweak the sliders, I always seem to come out looking...odd. I am especially bothered the wrinkles next to my nose--I can't seem to be rid of thim without making my nose ten miles wide. Here is a picture.
http://www.sarcasmlass.com/smile_line.jpg

I see lots of good-looking AVs walking around, how do they do it? I don't want anything exotic, just a normal, young-looking face.

Is it just a matter of tweaking the sliders, or is it possible to purchase an avatar shape that has been morphed to look a little nicer?

You know, it is curious that lots of skins are sold but not more shapes... or shapes AND skins (kind of like shiny AND textures)... looks like there may be a good market for this.

If you have a friend with a good shape, ask 'em if you can have a copy to tweak... you'll still look quite unique as long as you stick to your own combo of schtuff.

Trivia: My own shape is a composite of MANY Residents... Willow Zander, Lady Dawson, Madiera Westerburg, etc. and based it on what a daughter of the offline me would look like.

Wrinkles next to nose? I have those too, they're on lots of avs, but shading on some skins minimizes it, as does checking the AVATAR VERTEX PROGRAM thingie in your grafx preferences.

I have the nose thing too...good I am glad to know its just not mine.

Funny thing though, Torley...I have asked a couple people for numbers of this and that on their avies. Just to see what the difference is between whatever I have and they have. You would not believe how many people hold those numbers sacred. They wouldn't share that number if their lil AVs life depended on it. LOL

Marilyn Murphy is also really good at giving tips on body shape. Pen is 7'4" and is super thin. Her hips used to jutt out really badly. Looked super boney! Mari helped me make my hips smooth and curvey without me having to make my butt too big or odd proportioned to the rest of my body.

And yes, I think this would be a great service for someone to go into!! :D

hi. ty pen. i have always just done this for free. i have a free notecard that gives the numbers for a pleasant well balanced avatar body, that is intended to give new girls a solid starting point that they can tweak to thier own desire.

as to the shading around the nose.

head size and how long you make it from top to bottom and front to back is a factor in that. carefully make a new copy of your current av shape and re name it and put it in a folder. then adjust your head shape a little at a time. if your high cheek bones are sticking out a bit much, this can cause the shading u are seeing. its a problem because instead of adjusting the cheek bones, to flatten them a bit u should adjust the length of your face, up and down, and the front to back numbers. also, the head size itself is a factor and you should play with that number. when in doubt go larger.

every skin is going to look different and affect this shading. to the point that for a new skin, you probably will need to adjust your basic shape numbers to suit it. when i got my first new skin a year and a half ago, i adjusted my avatar to suit it, and then have worn the same skin ever since, because i know finding that happy balance between skin and shape is the key, and once u have it the way you like it, better stick with it.

In order to reduce that wrinkle line next to your nose, I recommend raising your mouth slightly, reduce your upper cheek bones, and maybe increase your lower cheeks. After enough subtle balancing of your facial contours, you can eliminate most sharp accentuated lines.

I noticed in the New Product forum that Angela Robertson was selling a Shape pack that closely emulated famous Hollywood actresses. If you are having problems with your Shape, then that might be launching point for starting your customization.

Hi Elianna

I do make shapes, I'm fortunate enough to work with Jade Jensen and Ryntha Sauvage to be able to include skin and clothing with my avatars but I also sell the shapes alone.

Alternatively give me a shout in world, and i'll be more than happy to help you out if I can. For free of course ! lol

This is my own avi.

Marilyn's advice on shape problems is definitely helpful.

One thing though, I think she and I agreed on this one. Noses in SL are extremely difficult =/.

Secondskin Labs used (still do?) to offer a free Head shape adjustment file that helped soften lines of the face. I still use it. It has to be reinstalled after every upgrade.

All skins are different. The more hand painted ones TEND to look smoother as far as facial lines in my experience, perhaps becuase of the differences? I guess a skin designer would help more on that.

I particulary find i have less line prolems on my Darker Exotica (Mocha) then on My Pale Exotica with facial lines.

I have less than either of those two with a tan nomine skin.

Also it seems to me sometimes at certain angles/lighting my face doesnt look Near as good than other angles.

Hm I can't find that head softening thing... maybe they don't distribute it anymore?

And I couldn't get any of those tips to work... they're still there no matter what I tweak, and I don't want to completely change my face to get it.

Hopefully Elianna will have better luck :D

Wow! Thank you everybody, this is GREAT advice. I never expected that head size would make a difference.

I will check out all the shop & product recommendations too.

There are several merchants in SL who now sell Av shapes as well as skins. Prices aren't horrible, usually around $300 to $500.

But I want to post a warning. Some (NOT all) av shape sellers are ripping people off. They're charging you for av settings that they got for free from other people, and none of which are really industry secrets. If you buy a shape, it should be only because you don't have time or desire to play with and understand the Appearance settings.

Saving your av settings to a different name file is an excellent idea. Then, go crazy. Play and play and play with settings, focusing on one area at a time to get a feel for how things relate. If you get too far out of whack, close out of Appearance without saving or reload your original shape.

What I've found is that there aren't many sliders which should ever be taken to extremes (talking < 30 or > 65 here). Some of the worst Avs I've ever seen had bone-skinny legs and boobs set to 90, or square man-like jaws on a female with linebacker shoulders. See what you can do by keeping your major settings somewhere +/- 15-20 from the middle (50) except for your feet and hands (feet and hands should always be set as small as possible to fit the gloves and shoes that are sold).

Large boobs start getting blocky edges on them. Large shoulders make you look extremely unfeminine (and can look bizarre on some of the poses in SL). Huge butts may be funny for a while, but just wait til you try to wear most of the mini-skirts for sale.

With all the combinations of skins and slider settings, there's little worry about everyone looking alike unless we all start buying those av shapes people are selling. I can make my own butt huge all by myself, thank you.

LOL! Hey, at least you asked! That's a good shot taken. :)

Cindy, got any pointers to names of recommended shape-sellers I can check out, out of curiosity? Thanxies in advance.

They're buried in my Landmarks folder and I can't remember right now. If you're in-world I can look them up and IM you their landmarks.

A couple of them were smaller merchants I just stumbled upon while shopping for something else, but I liked the professional quality of their displays and the options they offered.

If I wanted something like that, that is :)

Most of the for-sale shapes look cookie-cutter to me. The cow-eyed, hoochie-haired supermodel look seems to be very popular these days, as does the ever-popular bubble-butt style.

Go figger.

I took this pic of my nose, i've played around with it and tweaked it so there are no damn lines! I think my cheeks were too big...

If you want the digits, you're welcome to em! Its only a nose! :D

I hate the blasted nose lines too. I've spent countless amounts of time trying to get mine to look decent. From what I have tried, the only way is to make the nose real wide and upturned like a lil piggy. I have noticed that Rynthas skins seem to blend the lines much better so it doesn't look like you put on Mr Potato Heads nose.

Care to share your nose slider numbers so I can try em out hehe
