Two more points.
McDonalds employees are not minim wage workers, at least here in Chicago land they are paid $9 a hr. A Walgreen’s Pharmacy Tech only starts at 8.25 and they are the ones giving you the drugs with the Pharmacist just Checking there work.
The Customer is ALWAYS RIGHT! You work in customer service start kissing my ass. I am a Eng, when I meet with a customer I kiss there ass so much they walk away chapped and my lips are just hanging there.

There are way too many customers than what they can really handle. So your importance to them can tend to go down. A lady once got pissed off cause the shake machine kept breaking. They have had to get it fixed several times and it would always break again in a few days. So when they apologized for the machine, she was so pissed off that she said she was never coming back there again. The employees and the managers really don't care if someone never comes back. There is no difference in sales. The line always wraps twice around the building during lunch.

That's easier said than done. The reason I never got a job in the food service industry in the days before I got a 'career' job (similar pay, more job) is that I couldn't even find a place hiring. In the town I grew up in, the McD's/BK/KFC/etc had more people applying for employment than were eating there. I think Oregon still has the highest unemployment rate of the US. (hence why I left)

Overall, the best advice for both customers and employees of any business is that respect is a two-way street. You have to give it before you can expect to recieve it. If you don't like it, go spend your money somewhere else.

Oh I know it isn't easy, I was job hunting for awhile during a slow economy for a similar type of retail job (not food service related, screw that :p ). If you need something ASAP NOW you do what you have to do, but in the long term over a few months I find it hard to believe you're seriously making an actual effort if you're unable to find something you're more comfortable with. Well, unless you're making an actual effort and simultaneously walking into places looking like a slob or being annoying expecting to get an interview on the spot.

I don't mean the "actual effort" of filling out the applications and sending them out to 20 different places, I mean actually going into the store/whatever and talking to managers, inquiring about the status of any openings, making phone calls periodically to see if any openings have turned up, and so on. It's not easy but we're not competing to become the next CEO of Microshaft here. Retail jobs are probably some of the most common ones out there, right?

Help the economy some, and stop being so damn useless you stupid bucket of bolts! R2 is 1,000 times more useful than your tin man ass, and he's shaped like a salt and pepper shaker FFS!

Not really. In the DC area, many local retail chains have died over the last 20 years. I myself had to move on after 10 years with local retailer years ago.

Local chains are falling to the "big box" retail chains, such as Wal-Mart or Target. They may hire many to run the stores, but they also limit benefits, and tend to be non-union shops. Any (legal) work is better than nothing, but unless you live in an area where the cost of living is cheap, that Wal-Mart check won't go very far. Today, I read in the Post that the average hourly income required to rent a two bedroom apartment inside the Beltway was over 22 bucks an hour. That's quite a gap in income, if you consider that the average Wal-Mart employee makes less than 10 bucks an hour.

The sticks? like out on two-lane highways with almost no traffic and the closest town is an hour drive? that'd be a weird place to find a franchised restaurant. :D

Hey hey, I wasn't speaking from a sole-source-of-income POV. :) I'm just addressing mainly Hikaru's or anyone else's position if they're working part time as a student, or whatever. And if you ARE able to survive on a McD's type income, I'm also saying that there's usually (at least in my area) lots of other jobs at the same wage level. Point being: lower pay=weaker competition for the job as a general rule.

But if retail isn't dominant in the DC area, what is? (besides lobbyists :p )

I have been to St Charles. Yes. :) If you drive another 50 miles out of St Charles they have all those lovely sons of the Confederacy reclaim your heritage billboards. Last time I was in STL they were passing out Klan recruitment letters on peoples lawns. Sticks.

I grew up in the sticks of Illinois and since Steak N Shake was founded in the sticks, they are mostly in the sticks. I have never seen one in a major city.

I would give anything for a steakburger and a banana shake right now
