 I am beginning to realize that an instinct I had when I first heard about the rolling rate system was likely for good cause. That instinct being that many oldbies do not have excessive rates and that most of them have accumulated a large portion of their rates some time ago (more than six months back) and that they will indeed be getting the short end of the stick on this deal. Let's get more oldbies in here to post their ratings so we can quash sentiments like this one: ""...I love how many old players think they have some natural born right to be paid lots of linden dollars every week for doing nothing for the rest of time"It should be noted that the poster who posted that originally said "all old players" but gave in and changed it to "many". I recieved an informal forum warning in the process, but hell, I guess it was worth it. Although going from "all" to many isn't much of a concession and is incorrect IMHO....

trust me when i say i understand. i hate to think of all the appreciation i've shown turning into smoke and disappearing into the past; however, i also know that we need growth in this area.. and while many of us have a serious appreciation for our ratings, we also know that the whole system has gone bunk.
while i admit the worth of earned ratings, losing them isn't as bad as it may seem. we may personally know a vague history of them, but there is no description of when/where our ratings have come from.. or were given to.
Kathy, if i may borrow your example of Mother's Day cards... this is more like collecting a bunch of them, except there is no personally written message, nor any pre-written message.. not even a designation of the holiday. it's more like giving your mom a slip of paper that says: good momminess = +1.. and it would be anonymous as well.
see? it hurts, which i completely understand, but just look at it logically.. there is really no knowing of what came from where. the history doesn't even exist except for in our mmories.
trust me when i say i understand.. take a look at my ratings.. now, i'll most likely lose all but maybe a few positives and most likely keep most negs given to me. it's not going to be fun.. but i believe we're seeing LL attempting to overhaul the whole system and this is just a step in that direction. a painful one, but it should still get us to where we need to be.
like many have expressed, i agree with abolishing ratings altogether in favor of a more descriptive commentary. also, in this proposed system, one would be required to write an explanation when giving a rating.. positive or negative. also, the names of those who give ratings should be viewable per rating by the person receiving them.
if there is a dispute to the validity of a "commentarating", then it could be addressed in specific when relaying information to LL.
in any case, here's my current (which includes a new triple-neg i just noticed when taking the pic.. yay):

I used to build sandcastles.
Yeah, really. I'd make them so I knew they'd get wiped out. It still didn't keep me from doing it, and in the process, made me appreciate the zen-like quality of enjoying something that would be returned to its original chaotically-ordered state.
Ratings, as of a few months ago I guess, or whenever I forgot to bother checking, don't mean much to me.
I won't be posting mine for that reason.

I don't get out much like I used to..and ratings for my content come here and there. I'm alone alot more now working on content than I used to be. I don't see how this evens the playing field. Look at our leader boards..an oldbie is up there in appearance, who knows how much of her ratings will go out the window. On the other hand in third place is someone who's been here since 9/14/2004..so her ratings aren't going to change. Unless I misunderstand what's about to happen, I'm not jumping for joy.
