The reason I post this is that a long while ago someone had the nerve to bash me about the basic programming language. Of course since I have been in this since before most of you were born i know what this language is capable of . Serious arguments do not need such qualifications and insults. It really isn't even a question of power. In that you are right, the power lies in the compiler. That isn't the point though. What it is a question of, is what is the language designed for, what is it suited for. How much of your development time is going to be spent fighting the syntax of the language to get what you want done? Different languages are designed with different goals in mind, different design strategies and different design concepts. Some languages can do in a couple of lines tasks that would require pages of unique structures and systems to implement somewhere else. That is why certain languages are predominant in AI programming, certain ones are predominant in Desktop Applications, certain ones for Games, certain ones for Mobile Devices, certain ones for Database handling. It is not a question of power. It is a question of matching the use to the language and finding the language that matches the needs. Statements like "visual basic is as powerful as C" is like saying an orange is as juicy as an octopus. When you need your vitamin C you aren't going to try cooking up an octopus. (all right if someone says octopus is a good source of vitamin c .... ).Sorry if that came out a little harsh, its not meant to be. _____________________

You know what is important here ....
Its the end result. I really dont care what a game , app or utility is written in as long as it does what it is supposed to do. I have seen Language wars for years , Bottom Line is that as long as an application works and works well it really dosent matter what you write it in . As far as bowing down to me . Nope. These things are fun Do what you wanna do Ama, The only thing i don't appreciate are personal insults . If you Like "c" , Pascal, , Vb, , Lisp, Fortran , Assembler , Vb , Darkbasic , Biltz 3d , fourth , Pilot ,logo, java, llscript, jamagic , smalltalk ,ADA, or a dozen others then use what you like . The proof of the application is the response of the people that use it . This is a discussion of some multi user games written in BASIC ! Not a programming flame war If it works for you then use it ![]() |

I disagree with everyone! The most important thing is having your app run with as few CPU instructions as possible. Java for instance, a GREAT way to learn concepts, but thumbs it's nose at the philosophy I choose to adopt.

'Course my granpappy tells dem there tales of the machine 'anguage. <shudder> Dem was dark days indeed! lol I can't program worth s**t in any language. ![]() Javascript programs are nice to look at but they tend to suck the life out of my computers. ![]() _____________________

The name is Ama, not Ana. Thanks.

The proof of the application is the response of the people that use it . If it is, then language is an important factor of making a program. Finding the language that best suits what you want to program is important. Forcing a language to do what you want can create headaches, bloat the software, take longer to make, and in general be a real pain. End result wise, whatever you can make work, as long as it works, is good. Programming process wise, using a language that isn't the best match for your project needs is not good, and can effect the results. _____________________

Exactly Garoad.
My real question though is off topic: How many pelicans are there in a pocketful of pelicans? _____________________
