I have to admit, the lack of 'white' focused special events has bothered me occasionally in the past, especially when the part of the country I'm presently living in has whites as a cultural minority.

Well... being 'white' is a little ambiguous.

Being 'white' you can be:

English (British)
Irish
Portugese
Spanish
Polish
German
Serbian
Russian
etc, basicly from any nation where it was too cold for your ancestors to get used to tanning (and therefore developed light-pigminted skin).

Being 'white' means you may have descended from any number of these, and therefore, can participate in their celebrations.

I really dont get race/color-skin crap, I mean, the color of our skin is based upon only THREE friggen genes! Out of like what, 3-4 thousand that make up the entire human genome!

Yup. Seeing I'm 1/26th of about half of those, I wonder what the hell they'd DO for a 'white' month. Every hour feature a new heritage or something.

If you check closely, you'll notice that whites don't have a lot of history to celebrate that doesn't involve some sort of limp-compensation involving the women and children of someone with less money than them. Settlement of America? The Irish Potato Famine? The Crusades? The War of...whatever?

My issue is the fact that as a WHITE AMERICAN, you are a racist if you wonder why there is no Miss WHITE America Pagent. THere is a Black one, a Latino one, an Asian one....
but conspicuously missing is the WHITE American Pagent.

I'm not going to list all the African Countries, but you'd do well to remember that Africa is not a country but a continent.

Actually the more that I think about it, all ethnicities come from various countries. There are many Latin countries, yet they can have latin pride, there are many black countries, yet they are allowed black pride, there are many arab countries yet they are allowed Arab pride, why are white people the only group not allowed to have white pride but must identify with their specific country? Is this not racism?

Not that I would advocate this position because I truly believe that all pride based on race just further seperates us and is exactly what causes racism.

You should check with the event coordinator next time you go to your Klan meeting, I think they have those things.

This is a common argument that comes up, and I can see both sides of it. The short answer would be this:

Historically in the United States, white European decendants have been the majority, and are the powerbase politically. For a very long time, no diversity of people was reflected at all in entertainment, politics, business, pretty much all facets of mainstream life were predominantly white. You may say "Where is White Entertainment Television" and I would point out that 90% of the actors on television are white. Where is the Ms. White American pageant? For years, there were never ever any non-white contestants in the Miss American pageant. Where is white history month? Try January-December. American history is so skewed toward the European perspective that it leaves out the experiences of many others.

When you have a group that is in the majority and enjoys the majority power, you don't get to cry foul when someone tries to make something their own so that they can be included. If this were truly an equal society, we would not need any of that. As it stands right now, there is still a long way to go.

The last time I checked, there are plenty of European centric events, such as Italian parades, Irish parades, German festivals, Polish festivals, etc. You already have almost every television show and movie, the vast majority of political seats both national and local, and you are still in the majority for now. What more do you want?

I think you're missing the point here. One thing about SL/virtual life is that there's NO WAY you can judge someone by their skincolour, since its theirs to choose. You could actually have a nice chat with a white AV who happens to be black in real life. Haha. Hope that makes you nervous.

The problem is the original poster of the thread. You are right, in a world where we can make ourselves blue elves and robots, looking at an avatar to judge race becomes irrelevant. Too bad there is not some way to get all the racist, homophobic, misogynistic closet cases to be colored some color, like yellow, so we could avoid them. Then we could at least see Christopher at night.

I can see why this is casuing heated issues. I can see why people are getting angry at the poster.. he probably not going about the right way of expressing his opinion. I have to say i did think it strange when my locl tv netword announced one of its news reader had one the "Asian news reader of the year" award. I thought that would be more insulting to asians, saying there not good enough to be just classed as a news eader of the year, but a Asian news reader.

How long do immegrants have to live in a country to be considered 'natives'?

Evidently longer than a few hundred years. A few thousand? 20,000? What's the cut-off point from immegrant to native?

Well really, all men evolved from apes, who all lived in Africa, so technically we're all African.
