From: My Mackenzie Hmm...first off, I thought long about posting this as I usually keep out of debates, but this thread got under my skin. I'm sure my grammar, punctuation and spelling are not always perfect, as I do hurry too much when I type. Also I never learned typing in school or anywhere else, only by chatting on the computer.
It bothers me that the words *dumb*, *mediocre* and *lazy* are used here. Many SL'ers do not have english as their first language, and also consider that dyslexia may be a problem for others. I agree with you It's always impossible to talk in generalities without catching some people in the net who have legitimate reasons. English not being a first language is a common reason in SL, and perfectly understandable. I'm personally a sloppy typist and frequently insert a word other than the one I intend to write. Not sure why that is. I do think that as far as general trends, when you eliminate those that have good reasons for difficulty with language, you're still left with a high percentage who should be better than they are and really don't have a legitimate excuse.

Sometimes that is a halmark of Dyslexia. I myself have it and also transpose letters too like turning 'Sir' to Isr' for example.

Funny thing is I'm eating a spoon full of cream cheese right now. Then I will be making a cheese cake.

It is not only reading and writing. It is also arithmetic, geography, history...
I blame most of it on the obsessive and selfish pursuit for the almighty dollar.
In contrast to much of the world, where people work for a living, in the USA 'we' work to keep up with the Joneses. In the USA, one car is not enough. One TV is not enough. A three bedroom house is not enough. Work, work, work. Career comes first. Appearances come first. Our love for the green comes first, everything else comes after.
Look around. How many kids do you see come home and there is no Mommy or Daddy home to take care of them or guide them? Why would they be? They are out working to make sure the kids have the latest video games, $80 jeans and a high definition tv.
TV has replaced the love and attention of parents, and if you have noticed what is it that kids watch nowadays, no wonder they talk how they talk and act like they act.
Schools have become little more than babysitters.
Schools and educators are restricted on how and what to teach. Little brats are branded ill and pumped with drugs instead of a with solid dose of discipline and care from the school and parents. We confuse laziness and lack of discipline with mental illness.
Improper language usage is accepted for the sake of political correctness.
National self-centeredness blinds schools and the news media. Ask the next person you run into to locate Mongolia, El Salvador, or Zimbabwe in a map...
Until our priorities are clearly defined, the decline of the family and with it the educational system, will continue.
Please... I am not judging your own family or the way you raise your kids. Simply look around. If you do not see what I see, great! It is quite possible that I have tunnel vision and my experience is unique to middle class suburbs of Chicago.

From: Jauani Wu i am astounded by the complete lack of reading and writing skills that i encounter on the forum and in world. Are you bitching about my typos again? And as far as sugar coating your thread by trying to convince us that you have poor writing skills so that your criticism seems less harsh, forget it. You are so transparent. You're an elitist Wu. Pure and simple. GO HABS GO!

"Ummm...like...ya know what I'm sayin?....like...I....ummmm...gots ta do dat Torts paper some time, yo...ummm....ya know what I'm sayin', ya know what I'm sayin'?"
Here was a typical conversation with half of my 1L class last year at the Appalachian School of Law...Even better was having a group of District court judges come in as guest lecturers and having their first five question answered in the same manner...typically by some little dude who wouldn't even stand up to answer them.
