I can dig the invite scheme.... but, maybe there should be a limit on how many a single person can invite? Also... maybe only 1st gen can invite? Maybe not.. but its a thought.

I like having a rare last name, but I also like the idea of being able to invite new family members. If an invitation system was used, I think invitees should be decided by a certain number of family members rather than one member.

I like the idea of invite into the family, and also the vote on if it should be opened or not.
Such as mentioned before: 1) Invite into family of a current member (with a name change) would be charged. 2) Invite of a newbie into a family (upon sign up) would be free. Vote wise: A family name is selected and the current *ACTIVE* users with that family name are polled on whether or not the name should be opened. A percentage of "yes" would be needed to open. ACTIVE users would be those who have logged in within say a month or two. Either one would be fine with me. _____________________

I prefer for the last names to continue to be retired. It makes a difference. Almost a family history. Plus, there's a significance to having an old family name, or a rare one. I'd prefer not to have Yamamoto become "Jonesified" (no offense to the Jones, who are ironically rare and ancient).
But, if you decide to allow families to vote members in, then you should allow them to vote members out, eh? ![]() And if we are creating our families by invitation, or voting, then - with our newly strong family identification - I suppose we better have a Family option for IMs. _____________________

I'd like to see people using a person as a referral to be able to choose the same name as the referrer. That way, RL friends / family members one invites could be in the same "SL family" as well.

As far as I can tell, there seem to be no more active Skidoos (I was Kingey Skidoo way back in beta). Maybe that could be one of the first names brought back if LL goes through with this.

HEY USH Come post here... what do you think? *smiles*I would have replied earlier but I was getting Linden slapped! When they asked me to choose a new last name, I said "Midnight". That didn't go over too well. ![]() |

Under this same theory, then I'd like to propose that we suspend all new people from joining, and divide up the sims between really old people and only kind of old people. You guys are right, we need to never share or open up anything because we've EARNED our names...
Now....if we could just start segregating by national origin..... |

I know already I've pegged some family names as more prestigious than others, by virtue of their more illustrious members' public discourse, demonstrations of skill, or history of contributions to Grid society. bwahahaha!!! some of the most infamous people in sl also have closed names. i find the notion that the age of a name indicates a person's status in anyway to be quiet repulsive. the contribution of an av is less a function of the name than the age of the av. having said that, i personally like the ideas of names remaining closed, new av added by invite, or opened by vote. but as much as i like those options, i think the closed names should be reopened. i support the idea of reopening the closed names. _____________________

I don't think there is any point to opening previous names when there is an almost limitless amount of new names that can be created. That variety of naming has made SL interesting, and given us a sense of a "familY' of other users (ie..the Midnight Mafia of content barons). I think the idea of being able to invite someone to have the name is nice, but I would prefer that they remain reserved - it is always interesting seeing new groupsof names and there is really no need to backtrack at this point.

I think the invite only would be fine. I don't think old names should be reopened regardless of taco's wonderful display of dramatics
. It's not a matter of being elite but I feel like I really do have a "family" among the Midnights in SL. We slowly grew together over time and after many others left. We may not be extremely close but we know we can count on each other ._____________________

Keep em retired. Imagine all the "new" relatives popping up out of nowhere, wanting to borrow stuff and crash at your house.

I like having a distinct old-timer's name. Wouldn't have a problem with voting in a new family member.

The declaration from the Lindens at the beginning was that the names would not go over 150 people, and that they'd be retired when 150 people were named. We had a limited number of names to choose from and understood that future users would also have a limited number of names to choose from under the same arrangement.
If old names are reopened so that newer users have a much longer list of names to choose from than we did, then I would insist that we be allowed to rename our avatars from the same list. Only seems fair. Of course, a less chaotic method would be to leave the present system in place until we've run out of possible new last names. _____________________

If you think i won't calculate the average age of the people against this, and compound it to show that it truly is, despite some claims, a form of elitism, then you're taking unfair advantage of my limited math skillls

I think it'd be cool to allow name changes, including opening up formerly retired names as Robin described. I'd pay for a name if I could get the name I wanted.
