Okay, you're right; I guess I can see how you could take what I said that way.

Let me be very explicit:
IF you have dialup OR broadband AND a proper (ideally hardware) firewall and IF you only use your computer for something simple like surfing the web, upgrading from Win9x (or at least from Win98 SE) is not totally necessary.

If, on the other hand, you have a broadband connection and a raw install of Win9x, no firewall, etc., your computer is already practically guaranteed to be infected with so many worms, it's not even funny.

And of course, if you're planning on running SL, or any other modern software, you need to upgrade, end of story.

Would _I_ use a computer with Win9x? No, of course not. I'm not talking about the needs of a user like myself, though.

Yuppers - heres another trick.

You can get an OEM copy of Windows from places like Newegg online really cheap, PROVIDED you get them with hardware.

Now at Newegg they consider a new mouse to be hardware :)

When I got mine that way it cost me $50.

I don't know what the prices are now - but its worth looking into.

Siggy.\

Yeah that's the *wink wink* part of it. Last time I was out shopping for an OEM XP copy, the place would sell it provided you bought a power cord. But Siggy got a better deal. :(

Only because it was the last of their service pack 1 stock -- which I thought amusing as it updated to service pack 2 as soon as I'd finished installing and updating a copious amount of drivers...

(Side rant - not trying to start an OS war.. Don't you LOVE how it takes 973 reboots to get your Mobo and video card up to scratch with a clean install? -- whereas when I use Linux rebooting is considered a sign of the apocalypse?)

Service pack 2 is indeed more expensive at the moment - but not by much : currently (as of this post) there is a weekend markdown at newegg, and windows xp service pack 2 OEM costs $87.95 (WITH hardware -- you need a new mouse anyway).

Add in shipping and handling of a few bucks.

Siggy.
