I voted yes because I'm too lazy to read the book and my bf loves the book and tells me about it all the time that I feel like I have read it. Anyways, as long as its true to the book, I vote YES!!!

Yes, absolutely, I think it wouold lend itself to movie format very well.
Wouldn't it be fun to produce it in sl? There's some sort of weird self-referential irony going on there. The range of facial expressions would have to be vastly improved to allow for any av acting though. |

Yes! Unless Keanu Reeves stars in it. If he does, then....<sigh> yes, anyway.

Noooooooooooooooooooooo!
Keanu Reaves must not star in anymore science fiction movies. He must be stopped at all costs! Scratch that, Keanu Reaves must not start in any movies that I might possibly want to see ever. |

I'd be interested in seeing this... "cyberpunk" in the media tends to be a big hit or miss. Look at the Matrix, and then look at the sequels... and then look at Johnny Mnemonic. Also look at the success of computer games like Deus Ex, but then observe the lukewarm reaction to the sequel -- and so many other games. Blade Runner was not a big box office smash when it came out, but continues to amaze and inspire today.
I haven't read Snow Crash yet, so I can't say much with an informed opinion here. My guess is, if they ever make one, a lot of people will ignorantly accuse it of ripping off the Matrix *sound of electroGibson rolling his techy eyes*I would, however, like to see a Diamond Age movie -- another Neal Stephenson masterpiece. It'd require heavy editing and adaptation, but it'd be EPIC. ![]() _____________________

I can't really say either way. I've never read Snow Crash, but I find that when Hollywood gets ahold of things, they go through a blender and crap comes out. The end result inevitably has 500 instances of product placement in it, along with promotional tie-ins. I can't recall any recent instance of Hollywood being faithful to the source material.

I love Snow Crash and I'd love to see it as a movie. My fear is that it would be easy to make a really expensive and hokey movie out of it.

Well, the Mesopotamia (or whichever ancient culture) thread in the book would have to be handled VERY differently for a mainstream movie, the discussion in the books is awfully close to Melville's treatise on whales even for a book, for a movie no way in hell. Might be able to exposit the gist and run with it in a movie, could be tricky.
The courier character would need to be aged a few years for Hollywood, though I don't think that would be a big issue. A fair chunk of the rest would probably fit pretty well in a movie format. I would see the movie just to see the skateboard/motorcycle wheels. Those were SO cool. |

Ok, well let's add this factor: It's a very talented INDIPENDENT film studio and I (an avid fan of the book) am adapting the script. So it's funny like the book, and not sex.

I'm still waiting for a damned Neuromancer movie... grr.
Despite it being awful, I still liked the Johnny Mnemonic movie... it bore almost no resemblance to the original story, unfortunately, but Keanu Reeves' rant under the bridge still makes me giggle. ![]() _____________________

I would throw on my RadiKS coveralls and poon heavy metal vehicles thru the burbclaves and Sacrifice Zone just to see a well done indie version of Snow Crash! ![]() |

I would hate to see a snowcrash movie. lol
The book itself was just cheesey, stocked with enough clichees, and juvenile enough -- and with book to movie translations being what they are -- it'd make it worse! I'll give it merits that Neal Stephenson had some interesting ideas surrounding language-religion; but he pretty much just threw the entire book around those ideas which he just barfs out through the librarian. I would have rather just read the librarian bits as an essay or something. And as an aside; William Gibson's idea of the Internet in the future that he wrote about in the Bridge series -- specifically Idoru -- was more SL like than Neal Stephenson's "metaverse." His post-Internet "matrix" was even cooler but is waaaay beyond SL. But I digress.. sorry. Hijack over. ![]() _____________________

The discussions of Keanu Reeves and favorite sci-fi compels me to bring up the Richard Linklater adaptation of Philip K. Dick's "A Scanner Darkly"
I was so crushed by the "Minority Report" movie that I couldn't bring myself to see "Paycheck", but being a hardcore PKD fan, I had to look into this one. We have a reasonably visionary/indie director, some interesting stars (Reeves, Harrelson, Downey, Jr., Ryder) and approval of his estate. This is a story with a lot of unfilmable elements, not unlike "Snow Crash". I am hoping they can pull it off. For a different experience of "Snow Crash," I can recommend you get ahold of the unabridged audiobook from audible.com or itunes. _____________________
