Apparently a man was asked to leave privately owned land by a hunting party that either had perrmission to hunt on or owned said land in western Wisconsin. One witness said he left and then returned with an assault rifle and opened fire on the group. CNN makes it sound as though he was shooting from a deer stand. I should probably wait to say what I think they should do with him until more details come out, however, if it is as some witnesses said it was on a local news flash I saw this evening, I think he should never see the light of day again. One thing that drives me crazy in this day and age is the sense of entitlement so many folks seem to hold. This is an extreme example and quite sad. http://www.cnn.com/2004/US/11/21/wisconsin.shootings/index.html

Holy crap. This was the first I'd heard of this, and I live in Wisconsin. Then again, I live in the civilized south-central portion...

From: Jauani Wu "guns don't kill people, people kill people." that's just plain crazy! Yeah, 5 people dead and 3 wounded (2 of those fighting for their lives) because someone asked him to not hunt there. Jeez, even IF they were totally wrong in asking him to leave how could he justify killing people over it? Nut job, plain and simple. I think that folks who apply for hunting licenses should have to have a background check and/or personality test. (I used to hunt by the way, until it became so crowded.)

I think people who want to buy a gun should have to agree to be shot with it first We'd still have armed maniacs on the loose, but it's harder to snap and kill someone when you have to pump your pellet gun 50 times first. What the hell is there to hunt in Wisconsin? Cows?
Knew a guy that lived a few miles from my grandfathers farm, more than a few time my granpa dragged me over to his friend's farm to help paint the word "COW" on both sides of each cow in neon red paint.
Guess what.... Hunters still shot at his cows!
So I have no real love loss for hunters unless they are out stalking their prey in a loincloth using an obsidian knife of a flint spear....
Other than that... go hunting for meat at the grocery store, get your cows the honest way.
.....Just got a wierd image of Devlin leaping from a shelf of canned goods onto a pile of ground sirloin, Oh yeah... Im not gonna sleep for a few days now...

There's LOTS of whitetail deer, bear, geese, ducks, pheasant, etc. I live about 90 miles SW of where this incident took place in a suburb of Minneapolis, and we had a black bear in the back yard this year, we often see deer, and 1000s of Canadian geese have stopped migrating around here because we have so many man made lakes in the housing developments with fresh water being pumped into them all winter long thusly keeping the water free of ice in areas. As far as Devlin goes, was his diaper fresh? I am cringing thinking about E Coli!!!!

I heard an update a few minutes ago. It seems the shooter was a SE Asian man and that there was a language barrier. He was in their tree stand and was asked to leave, which he did, but returned with a semi-auto rifle and shot several people who then radioed their friends for help. The shooter then opened fire on the second group when they came to help. The police did apprehend him by the way. This kind of thing just doesn't happen around here. Sad all the way around...

I could only find statistics for 2001: In 2001, there were 29,573 firearm-related deaths in the United States (up 3% from 2000), including 16,869 (57%) suicides, 11,671 (39%) homicides (including 323 deaths due to legal intervention/war), and 1,033 (3%) undetermined/unintentional firearm deaths. CDC/National Vital Statistics Report, Vol. 52, No. 3, September18, 2003, p.71. The really interesting thing was: In 2001, the demographic groups (by age and gender) with the highest firearm injury death rates in the United States were males aged 85+ (40.2 deaths per 100,000 population), followed by males aged 20-24 (37.7 deaths per 100,000 population). I would have thought it the other way around. Then again the 85+ age range is sucide which accounts for greater than half all deaths by firearms. Just so that were comparing apples with apples, 2001 traffic fatality statistics were: 42,116.

I'd say it's more like comparing an apple laced with cyanide and an apple with seeds that sometimes accidentally kill people.
Why haven't we banned apples yet?

I am not pro-guns (even though do I own a handgun), and totally against civilian ownership of assault rifles, but reality is that even if the only thing left in this world was say, bananas, humans would find a way to kill each other with a banana. Actually, gun extremists use this fact in their propaganda "guns don't kill people...", but the fact still remains that the human race is a despicable species overall (you personally are an exception, of course) , and we can hope and preach all we want, but the basic genetic makeup of humans, will never change. Many good men and women over thousands of years have devoted and given their lives to make mankind better, and sorry to say, they have failed miserably. So sorry for those guys that got shot, but they themselves had guns, were out looking to kill something, and obviously were jerks since they refused to leave when asked. The other guy was obviously stupid for taking matters into his own hands. Chances are both parties had been drinking, so while we are making wishes, lets ban alcohol. Alcohol as we see time and time again is as dangerous if not more dangerous than a gun (and heck I love beer). - T -

Tito,
<<I am not pro-guns (even though do I own a handgun), and totally against civilian ownership of assault rifles, but reality is that even if the only thing left in this world was say, bananas, humans would find a way to kill each other with a banana. >>
The reason there are so many gun-related deaths is that the gun is designed to make it really easy to kill somebody. All it takes is the movement of a finger.
People can kill each other with their fists, but rarely do. The reason for that is that we are designed to go through a whole set of stylised confrontations that generally cause people to back down before the violence starts. And when it does start, hammering your fist repeatedly into someone's face takes time, and during that time the emotions have a chance to stablise.
With a gun, in that first flush of anger, the merest movement of a finger is all it takes to kill somebody, which is why it so often happens.
I'm really amazed that this doesn't appear to be obvious to everybody.

People don't kill people. Bananas do. No good...you need a funnel ...shove it down his throat then shove the banana down his throat till he chokes. Remember ...bananas don't kill people....people with banana's and a funnel do

Oh, well as long as there was a good reason. "I don't understand what you're saying to me.. so wait here while I get my gun will ya?' I'm guessing that was a satirical response and I don't think it was a *good reason*, however, it does sound as though it was a contributing factor. Tito, it was just one guy who was asked to leave, the same guy who got pissed and came back and opened fire. he was apparently hunting there without permission, i.e., trespassing. Now, that said, I have to take exception with some of the negative stereotypes being projected here. Having grown up in a state with abundant natural resources I know many, many responsible hunters. In my experience, this is the norm. As a matter of fact, I have only seen irresponsible hunters once in my life and we cleared the area and informed the authorities. *We* being other hunters who practice safe hunting, i.e., no drinking, no horseplay, extreme caution, wearing the appropriate color clothing, etc. Most of us use (eat) almost 100% of what we take, even the left overs are turned into sausage or jerky. In this state you must complete a firearms training course if you wish to hunt under 18 years of age, whether or not you will be accompanied by adults. I wish that ANYONE who wished to hunt was forced to do so, however, Minnesota hasn't seen fit to do that yet. Bear in mind this state is one of the most progressive, liberal states in the union and that 95% of the time it goes democrat in the presidential election. We are not a bunch of gun toting, drunken, good ole boys running aimlessly through the woods shooting at anything that moves. I could get into the fact that licensing fees pay for virtually all wildlife management programs and projects in states which have a lot of game and thusly hunters. The fact is without hunting, (at least here) many deer and other animals would waste away of starvation because there are so many of them, due to a number of reasons. There are more now than there were before our country became industrialized. Please research and think a little bit before you marginalize an entire group of people. It may be apples and oranges, but, the number of alcohiol related deaths due to motor vehicle accidents is considerably higher than the number of alcohol related hunting deaths. Does that mean it's ok, no, but it also doesn't mean that hunters are all drunken Jethros shooting up the countryside.
