There's been advertisements at the welcome area since I can remember.
Heck, there used to be MORE of it...
Doesn't LL still have a display thing where you could see ads and get landmarks?
It's one of the first things I remember messing with, back in beta!

What he said. :D

I guess I don't understand all this protectiveness of newbies, who are surely capable of just flying up and over a billboard or a pesky newby selling them junk.

What happens is that oldbies spam newbies with "welcome kits" and other freebies which are just spam advertisements for their stores.

The Lindens decided to get rid of the TOP PICKS which in the old incarnation were about great builds and interesting places.

When players were asked to replace this, they didn't do much. I started one on my land, but it's hard to do by yourself or even with just one other person, this kind of action needs workers, not people who spout ideas on the forums about what would be good to do -- if only somebody else does it.

I'm not sure that everyone understands the magnitude of this opportunity... being the first store that a nOOb visits can build meaningful brand relationships. LL is handing retailers a very valuable opportunity here.

I, for one, plan to bid and win at least 1 spot on the welcome area.

Just my 2,

I don't have a problem with paid ads in the Welcome area. A) They'll be under one of the shelter building things which I rarely go into and, B) I've become used to tuning out billboard-type ads anyway.

I guess as long as it abides the TOS and you win the bid to advertise, I guess so. Did you ever get to visit The Giant Cube?

I think the more important point is a purely practical one from a LL business standpoint.

Newbies buying hoochie hair or bling does not pay the bills. The point is to get a new resident out of a free trail week and into a premium membership with tier. Showing our newest residents the amazing possibilites of SL is a lot more likely to move them into the "profitable" category, and it is in all our best intests for LL to start making a profit.

Just my .02 on why paid advertising in the WA is a short sighted proposition rather than playing for the long term.

However, in the interest of meeting in the middle, why not do both? One wall with paid advertising, one wall with great places to explore?

Ah come on now, it was the GIANT CUBE, with its own gift shop, and a "Only 1500m to GIANT CUBE" sign in Lusk at one point. The caps are important. ;)
