These researchers will be asked to sign an agreement that their research will follow standard enthnographic research procedures, that privacy will be respected, and that no one will be put in a position of participating without their knowledge and consent.

this requirement is much more strigent than my university's (or most universities') policies are.

generally, in the case where full knowledge and/or consent are not obtained, it's usually still okay as long as 1) the data collected cannot be used to identify an individual (and sometimes a group), or 2) the individual will not come to any harm (including harm to finances, employment, or reputation) through the publication of the data, even if the data can identify an individual. (the second part is so vague wrt harm as to be rendered useless and inapplicable in many cases).

is ll disallowing research without consent even if the data collected protects the anonymity of the subjects?

The agreement requires that the researcher keep individual identities in the data and any published summaries or reports anonymous.

Research me! I'm neck deep in the SL Adult Industry, as well as being a known pervert and lover of porn! Plus I like sheep! :D

Actually, I do own a D/s and BDSM Club and an adult erotica gallery. But I bet it will be prove far less sordid and orgy-filled than one might think. We are mainly about education and safety.

Does the research incude any experimental drugs?

Good call on sharing the research ethics policy, robin. :)

Also good call to request that researchers have an easily-identifyable moniker; in a digital world where everyone wears their name and title above their heads, informed consent is remarkably easy if the researcher takes a moment to designate him/herself.

I personally would love it if they'd be forced to wear lab coats and carry a clipboard on them, but that might be pushing it. :p

I've no problem with research being conducted on what goes on in SL. It is a fascinating world, and removed as it is from typical MMO gameplay elements like "kill the enemy, solve the quest, level up, kill more enemies), it lends itself very nicely to study.

Let's not forget also, that the experiences of these students in SL may noticeably affect the reputation and growth rate of this world.

Thank you, Robin :)

And the background info was an interesting read, as well.

Deklax - To clarify, the agreement is separate from the policy, and is something we ask anyone doing formal research in SL to sign. It requires, among other things, that the identities of anyone interviewed be kept anonymous.

When someone is planning to do research, or hold a class, we'll notify the community by making an announcement in the forum.
