So, did the telehubs do anything?

If the system changes so that I have to go to a telehub first, or pay even L$1, I am not likely to use a telehub ever again.

Do you use them now? Or do you, like I do, start flying before anything has rezed and are gone from the hub before you even see it?

yikes :)

how about, $0 from a telehub.

Linden established rules for telehubs:
No charging for access.
No hostile areas.
so on and so forth.

The neat thing about this to me would be to create more traffic around certain areas of Second Life.

How about: Teleport from Anywhere to Anywhere cost: L$20-L$50
Teleport from Anywhere to Telehub: L$5
Teleport from Telehub to Anywhere: L$5
Teleport from Telehub to Telehub: L$0

And more telehubs to boot (maybe smaller telehubs?)

Mainly, I just like the idea of high-traffic areas, and low-traffic areas.

I want to have my kicking house in the city, and my chill cottage in the boonies.

I'm relatively new here, so as far as I'm concerned, telehubs have always been there.

I am in agreement with Ama Omega. When I need to go somewhere, I select it in the map, hit teleport, and then fly towards the beacon. I've usually travelled a good distance before textures have loaded and I know what the surrounding area even looks like. Used to be that I would end up running into walls because of this. Now I fly as high as possible until I get close to my destination.

When I'm teleporting, it's very often because there's an event starting soon, so I wouldn't have time to explore anyway. It's not unusual to see one or two other avs flying the same straight-line path I am.

To be honest, before this thread, I didn't even consider that telehubs were for social interaction. I just thought they were so people would fly into events, instead of all just teleporting on the scene. I agree that the opposite approach would be much better for increasing local exploration: free teleports from a telehub to anywhere else, but to get to the telehub, you're on your own. (But how many people would set a telehub as their home?)

I dunno.....I like the idea of fast transporation, but when you teleport there is just NO chance to see anything interesting :)

I understand that most of you just teleport straight to where you want to be :)

In general, I now try to hop in a plane and fly to where I want to be, so I can see some of the sites[sic], etc . . .

I guess restricting the teleports would make some people miserable, but I find teleporting to be a bit bland.

lol...if you don't like it then you can always ignore them!

As for me, if I want to go flying around and exploring, I'll go do that....just don't force me to do it when I'm rushing to get back to an event after a crash. :D

What have the telehubs meant to me? Nothing much, except that I often end up somewhere else than I expected when I teleport. Teleporting being free means that I teleport a LOT more than I did (before I used it only in a time crunch).

IMO, the telehubs failed to serve the purpose of creating urban and rural areas because they ignored where people were already doing this. If a telehub was going to serve as the center of a city, it would have to be placed in the center of a city, not on empty ground in the middle of nowhere.

So by that logic, there should have been a telehub right in the middle of Freelon/Minna/DaBoom, and maybe another in Aqua, one in Tan, one in Rose, and one in Stanford or Hawthorne. Of course, the Lindens might have had to engage in some "eminent domain" and condemnation to squeeze them in! :D

I like telehubs in the air, it provides a more majestic view. Putting them on the ground makes it more like a dirty bus terminal.

I punch the throttle and burn away from them towards my target at a high rate of speed. It's not that I don't *like* them, it's just that I wanna go somewhere. I usually sightsee on my own terms.

The deal with telehubs, as far as I can tell, is that people are still going to sightsee when they're good and ready. If'n they're going somewhere, they might stop to sightsee on the way, but probably most of the time they'll ignore the scenery in favor of getting somewhere. Events are a good example of this.

I just discovered that the Stillman TH is on the ground now. I missed the point of John's post about checking it out now.

I have land in Minna on that island, so it took me a little while to warm up to the idea of it being on the ground. It sort of blew my mind at first. But, I think in that location, it works. I dont think it should be the norm, no reason some cant be floating and some on the ground. Adds to the personality of each one I suppose. The nearby bridges are nice but I doubt they will get a lot of use. The area needs a bit more landscaping with plants and trees, but I like how it looks on the ground there.

i wouldn't have a problem paying for direct ports except for the home call. i like the random idea too.

but i don't want to pay for general teleport usage. just make me fly to them and space them out quite a bit so i still have to fly over a couple of sims (i really do think that's a good thing).

we do need them. consider how large the world will be in six months.

I like the telehub on the ground in Stillman. I felt I noticed its surroundings much more than I do at the ones in the air. In the air the, the platform tends to hide anything that is built too close to the hub.

I also like the round teleport pads. It is good to have something to mark where people will appear. At the old telehubs, I think I subconsiously feel I should get off the platform quickly so I am not in the way of someone else arriving.

It would be nice if the map showed if a telehub was a large or small one. Then if someone wanted to see the adverisements or the item dispenser, they would know which one to go to.

Telehubs should not be changed to make them less convient. I do not think they should be spread farther apart, charge a fee, or require us to go to a hub to teleport from. As they work now, they do create a sense of distance while still making it easy to get anywhere in SL. They define local areas since any place that is too close to teleport to, I would consider nearby.

Before 1.1, I almost never teleported, since there was a fee for it. I flew everywhere, but if I was going to a certain place, I would go up as high as I could and fly straight there. I did not see any more that way then if I teleport--it just took longer. I did, and I still do, enjoy exploring to see what is changing, but for me, that is something I do when I choose to, not when I hurrying to get somewhere.

I think the telehubs as-is are the best method so far, and having them on the ground is even better. Down low, you can see the stuff immediately around them, AND surface culling would increase your framerate because of walls and things blocking your view during those first few seconds when everything is streaming to you.

We WANT people to travel the world, so free is best. When I feel like exploring, I explore. If I'm in a hurry to get somewhere I can't teleport directly to, I fly so high that the ground clutter doesn't get streamed to me. Besides... FORCING people to explore is not what Linden Labs wants to do. They are all about options, and free teleports are best.

lol kex.. if you want ammusingly annoying have that happen to ya while yer ears/tail etc haven't rezzed in yet and you're REALLY good'n stuck... have to log out often times, set yer preferences to start at home, and THEN log back in, and even then it can sometimes still glitch ya out for awhile (cienna once had to do a full unstall/purge/reinstall of SL for that)

=)

BTW, a little tip I learned. If you sit down on something, it will pass you through walls to get to the destination to sit. So if you're stuck inside something, just move your camera out and find something outside, such as the roof, right click and sit.
