Greetings!

DemonEye Designs, a new company in SL is getting ready to hold it's first annual 'Speed Building' contest! The contest will take place on Saturday, November 3rd, 2007, times will be announced at a later date.

Here's the deal::

Contest Overview:
Each contestant will be given a 30x30 platform over one of two parcels in the Sliderule mainland sim. (If anyone would like to offer a different venue, please PM me here on the forums.)
On this platform, and on ONLY this platform, they will be given one hour to complete a house for a basic 512m plot. House specifications are below. The trick is, the house must be fully furnished, with everything inside made during the contest as well!
---------------------------------------
House Specifications:
Must fit within a regular (Rectangular) 512m Plot, a maximum of 20m x 25m (500 sq. meters) and use no more than 117 prims, for the building itself as well as for the furnishings.

Absolutely no megaprims allowed.

Must include the following rooms (Does not need to be seperated by a wall)
-Kitchen
-Bedroom
-Living Room

Must make use of all of the 3 textures we will provide, though not limited to these textures.

----------------------------------------
Time Limit:

All contestants will be given 1 hour (60 minutes) to complete the build, with 4 contestants per round (# of rounds dependant on # of contestants). Anything made or placed after the 60 minutes is up will be removed completely from the build (Movement of full build to better place on platform is allowable)

---------------------------------------

Scoring::

All builds will be scored on the following criteria:
-Completion - 100 points (Is it done? All rooms in, and look finished?)
-Neatness - 75 Points (Are the walls aligned? Any unintentional gaps?)
-Originality - 50 Points (Is it a remake of another prefab? Can I find something very similar
for sale anywhere?)
-Extras - 15 Points each, maximum 45 Points (Another room, a garden, etc.)

Total:: Maximum of 270 Points

All scoring will be done by 4 judges, myself and three others to be announced at a later time. (If you would like to be a judge, please PM me here on the forums).

Each contestant will be watched over by a judge during the building process to ensure the following of rules, then all four will collaborate on the judging of each build.

Points will be docked from a contestants total for the following:
-Lack of our 3 textures- Each missing will be 10 points docked
-Unoriginal Furnishings (Not made during the contest) - 20 points each
-Time - If any building is done after the time is up, the item will be removed as well as 50 points being docked.

---------------------------------------------------
All contest information will be kept up to date on the DemonEye website starting tonight. Look there for up-to-date information, as well as contestant listings as we proceed. URL::
http://freewebs.com/DemonEyeDesigns
---------------------------------------------------

Prize::
The first place winner out of all of the contestants will receive L$3000 (As well as any money donated for the prize by other residents)

Second place will receive L$1000

And Third will receive L$500.

All three will also be featured forever on DemonEye Designs' Website.

Contestant Restrictions::
Any resident may enter, regardless of account type. Anyone can be banned from the competition for a few different reasons, all of which are common sense (Hassling judges, griefing, etc.)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Building Tips::

(These are why I'm posting in this forum, as well as it makes the most sense considering the contest type)

-Use 1 prim for two walls. Cut and hollow a single box and you can make the two walls of a corner, or a wall and ceiling section together.

-Use 1 prim for stairs. Just use a single triangular prim for stairs. Using a plank or actual stair texture will look fine, and won't use up 50 million prims in a limited space.

-The torus is your friend. If you're making something that needs to look natural, the torus is almost always the way to go.

-Shift+Drag. Holding shift and dragging along one of the positioning arrows copies what you have selected along that line. It keeps the copy and original perfectly aligned, and used in conjunction with ctrl+z can be used for some of the most complex, and beautiful, builds.

See the Ivory Tower Library of Primitives in-world for more tips, and more information on all of these.

What? 60 minutes to build AND texture? Texturing alone was given a day in this contest:

Have you tried to build in SL?

I'd sign up, but the time limit is extremely stifling.

Textures can be prepared way before if you want. Its the build itself that is judged. the three textures we provide are completely tilable, and not super high quality, but make you add a bit more creativity. That may be taken out however, as I know it can be kinda daunting lol.

But we aren't going to be examing textures to ake sure they are perfectly on it, and aligned and stretched just right. We're examining the building itself, and the craftsmanship in the prims part of it, not the texture.

Also, time limit may be changed to an hour and a half or two hours, but definitely no more.

This is a contest for builders, not texturers, we don't care if you use freebie textures, as long as it doesn't look like total crap we're happy ^^

And btw, I AM a builder. Thats what DemonEye Designs is, a building and landscaping business. I can build a pretty good prefab of this size in two hours, fully furnished, and with all textures and prims perfectly aligned and sized.

I know the time limit is daunting, but its a SpEEd building contest. I want to see what people can whip up in that time. I'm not looking for an amazing greco-roman palace in 117 prims and one hour, I'm looking for a decent build.

117 prims makes it easier in my opinion as well, since each furniture piece must be a maximum of (MAYBE) 15-20 prims for a few of them, and thats pushing it, you can't make super complex furniture with that amount of prims and time.

Seems to me this would be a hard thing to enforce. Are you allowing people to use prefab parts, like counters, sinks/doors, windows, etc? If so, whats to keep someone from just rezzing out a bunch of prefab sections and saying "Done!"

For each builder, we will have a judge ON their platform watching. And no, prefab parts aren't allowed, it all has to be built on site. the only thing you are allowed to have prepared is textures.

We aren't expecting amazing furniture, but something we can tell is a chair or table, and doesn't look like it would fall over if you poked it (So parts reasonably aligned)

As long as its rezzed at the basic size, yep. Allowed. Counts as a texture =P

EDIT:: Within reason. I think I'm going to limit it to 10 sculpty types per builder, and only for basic furniture or furniture parts.

EDIt PArt 2::

So basically, sculpties are allowed, but only 10 types (Sculpty textures) are allowed per builder, and only for basic furniture (Chair, couch, counter, etc), or furniture parts (Mattress, sink, etc)
EDIT AGAIN!

A new rule, any sculpties to be used must be submitted for review before building begins, for fairnedss to those who cannot use sculpties as wlel as others.

Another new rule, thanks to conversation with Danielfox

Tools such as primdocker will be disallowed. If you are found to be using s a similar device you will instantly be disqualified.

As much as it pains me to say it as a sculpty fan, I think perhaps you should just disallow them. If its a building speed contest, time spent making a sculpty is basically time spent outside of the contest.

Summary of rules added since original post::

10 sculpted textures per builder maximum, all sculpties must be submitted for review before building begins.

No tools such as primdocker (Autoaligners) allowed. immediate disqualification if you are found using one.

No layouts allowed. If you rez a 20x20 platform and texture it with a full floor plan, it will be removed. Immediately. You will not be disqualified, unless you repeat the attempt.

Instead of the three texture idea, you will be given a theme, to be announced that day, that your build must follow, if only vaguely (If its japanese, your greco-roman build won't get you a win). It could be literally anything, from space to a natural garden to ancient greece.

-----------------

A notice:: Just to be clear, photorealistic wall and furniture textures will get you absolutley no extra points versus open source frreebie textures. Its the build that will be judged.

For now I'll leave it as is, with the 10 limit and review needed, however, sculpties may be disallowed. Will be decided tomorrow.

To help enforce the 'no building huds' rule, we will have scripts turned off on the land for the duration of the event, and scripts beacon will be on for our judges.

Post if you're doing another one sometime. I had a little time last night so I tried this out on my own. I've made all kinds of things, but I've never built a house before. After 90min, I didn't have it textured, but I had a house and furniture.

You'd probably be able to do it fine then.. an hour for house, with texturing, then an hour for furniture, with texturing. If you managed both without in 90min, you'd probably be able to do it ^^
