I am looking for a few Jesus (the Christian savior) pictures. Preferrably something with Jesus shirtless and with taut abs. The pics of him on the cross would be great as he was both shirtless and really stretched out.
I'm looking through google images and keep getting pictures of Latino guys named Jesus.

Neehai,
Search for the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Lots of the type of hyperreligious stuff you're looking for.

Is anyone else freaked out at how often Jesus, a middle eastern person, is portrayed as an effeminate-looking "aryan" type. I mean, WTF, Jesus could not possibly have had a pale complexion, blue eyes or light brown hair. This shit should be illegal.

There was a fascinating article in Chronicle of Higher Education by R Marie Griffith, professor of religion at Princeton, entitled "The Gospel of Born-Again Bodies." Griffith examines the transformation of the image of Christ through history. The author, rightfully so, points out that the current American depiction of Christ is tremendously built, buff, blonde. meh. God has never really liked fat people. http://www.materialreligion.org/participants/griffith.html

Black Jesus sez, "Don't worry about ethnocentric depictions of me. I was a clean-shaven shorthaired Jew but it's like your momma always told you, looks don't matter. Have a nice day and see you soon."

In light of current forum flow, I thought this thread should be resurrected.

No one posted the most famous buff Jesus picture of all last time!? Here it is then - The Last Judgement in the Sistine Chapel (by Michelangelo, of course).

Ulrika - The picture that you posted of the animal screwing a hole in the skull of Jesus is very disrespectful to people who believe that Jesus died on the cross is an important symbol to them.
While you may think that this symbol is stupid and without meaning - others may not feel that way. (You know that I am not a Christian - so I am not defending the symbol, lets not go there).
We all hold different things sacred. I am not religious but I do hold certain places sacred and if people came in and left all their trash on them and treated them badly, I would be angry because they are sacred to me, and I would feel like they did not have respect for me by treating the place that I held sacred badly.
You can argue that it's free speech and you'd be correct. I can argue that it's in terribly poor taste and I'd be correct.
More importantly though, is not who is correct, but that probably, it's hurtful to someone.

From: Rose Karuna More importantly though, is not who is correct, but that probably, it's hurtful to someone. I agree. The picture is rather graphic and certainly not my typical style. The reason I leapt to post it was, that it had a huge impact on me in college. At the time I was an atheist but one who was still affected by religious symbolism and imagery. I remember being shocked when I first saw it, not just by the picture but by the fact that an individual would actually possess and show it to others. He was an intellectual rebel, irreverent to the core, capable of sharing things that others fear to see, hear, or say. I admired that. After a while, having shed my years of religious conditioning, I finally learned to chuckle at the picture. Unfortunately, that friend is long gone and will never know what an impact he had on me, only my initial horror and uneasiness. It is this reason that I post it now. I hope it affects you as it has me. It is honestly my favorite picture of Jesus. ~Ulrika~

While I can respect people's genuine feelings about the behavior of churches both today and throughout history, I can't really fathom what you're talking about. Something like this done in jest I get. Suggesting that it's somehow seriously meaningful doesn't make me understand why you did it, it just makes me hate you.

While cleaning up my SL directory at home, I discovered an old Jesus picture that Talen Morgan got in a bit of trouble for. It was actually removed by a moderator and then a day later, I reposted it and it stuck. Enjoy. ~Ulrika~

The author, rightfully so, points out that the current American depiction of Christ is tremendously built, buff, blonde. meh. God has never really liked fat people. http://www.materialreligion.org/participants/griffith.htmlIf you place the representations of Jesus on a historical scale you will also find that the few early pictures of him that survive were smooth faced (no beard) and tended towards blonde hair and a robust healthy appearance, whereas the more recent depictions (more than a few hundred years ater his death), are all bearded with darker hair showing a skinnier, frailer apearance. The paralell is also interesting in that middle eastern and greek male gods in general follow this exact same pattern of young robust "boy" god that evolves over time into more of a father looking figure. From what I have read this is thought to be similar to Apollonian worship in that Apollo was originaly worshiped as a sort of "golden boy" (a la Mithras I think), and later worshiped as the "wiser" bearded one. I believe there are many other examples of the same sort of thing in many older religions as well. The fact that his image corresponds so well to these archetypal forms is a good argument in fact for the possibility that Jesus as an actual person either did not exist or that representations of him have absoloutely nothing to do with whatever physical form he had if he did exist. Jesus is in that way a fairly typical representation of a generalised patriarchal god.

Have you ever seen Lord Raglan's Hero scale? In his book The Hero he defined a list of 22 archetypal life incidents shared by heros in folklore and then scored each of them for how many each had. The events include things like being born to a virgin, son of a god, killed by his own followers (usually on a hill), resurrected and ascended, and so on. All of them are actually pretty common. http://www.tam-lin.org/abby/raglan.html There's a pretty good documentary out on dvd called The God Who Wasn't There that makes the case that Jesus likely never existed. It 's a bit too Michael Moore for its own good, but it asks a lot of great questions. Worth tracking down.
