Please stop locking threads that are currently being used for fun conversations. The troll thread didn't name names and since the troll in question was banned the current topic evolved into a free-form, uncontentious discussion. What's wrong with that?

Also, I'd like to see a more descriptive reason that a thread is being closed instead of the standard "outlived it's usefulness" cliché.

I'm just saying.

Bumping this controversial protest piece as it has had 1 view after an hour. I must be losing my touch. :D

I have to admit, I'm confused that something such as the Word Change thread would never get locked but which provides no obvious intelligent discourse (or whatever wording Jeska typically uses) while some of the other threads that appear to be no more subversive in nature do get locked.

The one view was me. Hee. Bored at work.

I agree. After "You-know-who" left, the thread just sort of turned into mellow conversation and lots of pretty colors. I don't see why it should've been locked, either.

Yes! I was just thinking the very same thing. It's as if a thread can only exist if it is labeled and used for productive discourse or if it's labeled an used solely for fun. Hybrids get locked.

I would like to know how it is you think you know that the person you have labeled a troll has been banned.

There is only circumstantial evidence, however it's quite compelling. He was vanished right after a period when Jeska was actively moderating the General and Off-Topic forum this morning. Two threads were deleted, I received a formal warning, the fellow suddenly stopped posting, and someone noticed the posting of a 3-day suspension on the police blotter.

It was an eventful 10 minutes! :)

A three-day suspension is not the same thing as a ban.

Objection. Speculative argument.

Agreed. Strike that from the records.

I took the long road home. Maybe others did the same.

That's exactly why I started the Finish Him thread. Jeska can still be professional and find a way to work in an PWNED every now and then can't she?

By the way, is it AN pwned or A pwned?

I would like to see a PWNED on occasion myself. (I say it as "poned". Hopefully that's right. :))

I like to think of it as "pawned," referring to the colloquial chess phrase "en passant, dumbass."

Please don't start threads about threads which have been closed, per the forum guidelines:
Reposting – If a moderator removes your post, do not repost it elsewhere. Do not repost threads that have been locked or deleted and do not repost content that has been edited or deleted by a moderator. Furthermore, please do not post a "why did my post get removed" post. Send any further discussion regarding post removals to abuse@lindenlab.com.

Threads are closed when there is no obvious constructive discussion going on or when the content of the thread in no way meets the purpose of the Second Life Forums - which is to promote discussion and education about Second Life. We believe in an honest and open free exchange of ideas, and in always maintaining a respect for the opinions and positions of other people.

What's the point of "off-topic" then, Jeska? Why even take time to moderate it?

It means you're reading through off-topic, pointless threads trying to find the exact point at which they become "unconstructive" instead of policing the forums where real abuse occurs.

But in OFF-TOPIC, we can talk about NON-SECOND LIFE stuff. Man, I don't get this anymore. By you're very own defintion in your post above, you say you'll lock stuff that doesn't have to do with Second Life. But this very forum, OFF-TOPIC, was created to talking about stuff that is SPECIFICALLY *NOT* Second Life.

What gives?

Excellent points! Jeska, please answer Aaron's question above.

Abuse does occur in off-topic. And thus, the off-topic forum needs to be moderated as well.

It's so true. I've emailed that address many times in my long forum history and never had a single reply ever. In my opinion the spool file links directly to the bit bucket.

I think largely what determines what locks a thread is how many abuse reports it gets. If people started ARing off topic threads left and right, we might start seeing less of them except we'd also see a more "Don't MAKE me come over there" forum attitude out of moderators. So while some threads spiral all over the place, they don't degrade into anything we didn't overall want them to be. It's when they get truly bad on a consistant basis that someone gets suspended or banned.

Hahaha, I see Linden Labs is as bad at answering important questions in the forum as they are at answering them through email. Good job, LL!
