Hitler wasn't an atheist, he was a buddhist-hating honey-eating bear.

For what it's worth, I think Chip Midnight is a better atheist than me.

Sheesh... Godwin'd in the poll. That must be a record.

For the record, Hitler was a Catholic... Stalin had a Catholic upbringing, though what effect that had on his adult life is debatable, it's of interest to note that he made moves to replace worship of a god with "worship" of the state, effectively making Communism into a God... I've no idea about Mao. He's not usually in these kind of "questions" so I've not researched him.

Oh, and this won't end well... ;)

None of the above.

Lucifer's list was a great start to the truly influential atheists in history, though I don't think Einstein belongs on that list as he was more of a Deist.

The two most famous atheists, of course, were Ayn Rand and Madeline Murray O'Hare. O'Hare, for all her self-importance and antagonistic attitude, broke the myth imposed upon this country in the '50s that we had to have God in our schools and in our government.

And while I differ with parts of Rand's philosophy, she had it right when it came to personal accountability.

Einsteins theological viewpoint changed a few times through his lifetime.

you can also strike Howard Stern from the list, since he's Jewish.

Nope. Definitely Newt Gingrich.

Howard's from a Jewish family but he doesn't buy the god stuff.

That's sort of like saying my family was Christian because we decorated a Christmas tree each year and hunted for Easter eggs, even though we didn't believe in god and never set foot in a church.

Meh.

The question was most influential. Ayn Rand is influential, but compared to killing millions of people, starting a world war, founding a communist country of two billion people...? Not even a blip on the radar.

You can clearly see from this picture of Ayn Rand and Newt Gingrich standing together that Newt is taller and therefore more influential.

Get a clue.

He's half-jewish and not religious. Howard Stern is (as much as I hate to admit it) an athiest.

Also it is quite possible to be both Jewish and an athiest.

I should know --I am one.

Didn't Hitler's argument start off in German Catholic monestaries. I think Hitler was also very religious. He was obsessed with the cult, and I remember reading an article once about his obsession with finding the gates to Hell. Atheist normally don't believe you can actually find the gates to Hades.
