Lot's of folks think it works the other way 'round...but it doesn't.
Our brains are natural pattern matchers/seekers...so we have all these little beliefs floating around in there and something happens...oh! that fits belief X so it's ______.
Sometimes we believe things and we don't even know we are believing them...but we see "proof" of our beliefs everywhere...and our beliefs regulate our awareness and put a damper our ability to see the stuff that may conflict with what we believe. (Filters)
If we can ever come to terms with all this...we can all settle down and stop arguing and warring.
As for my belief? it's not blood, it's either some kind of natural phenomena (like paint or rust) or it's fabricated with pumps...but it's not blood.

I'm guessing that the statue is actually some kind of vampiric gargoyle with irritable corneas, or some equally rational explanation.
