From: Corvus Drake Companies that think that way have high turnover.
there are not enough motivated people to replace every person on the planet who doesn't care about their job.
There are three kinds of workers.
1. Those that give a shit
2. Those that fake giving a shit for a paycheck
3. Those that don't give a shit
#1 is the smallest group. Most of them are white collar.
2 and 3 make up the largest groups and are a mix of white collar and blue collar.
If all the twos abruptly became threes, our economy would literally collapse. Group #3 is unemployed, cause if they don't care they don't work. Group #2 is a fine group, these are people who need to pay bills. They are often high quality workers because even faking care means one is doing something. I would rather do the work myself than to pay a person who is not even willing to fake concern. Of course, there is always welfare for the lazy and apathetic.

You never, ever, ever want someone in group 3 to be intelligent and bored at the same time. I have one of my coworkers bringing me coffee with cream in it regularly. When she brings the coffee, however, there's no dairy in it. Do the math. Workplace antics, I love being #3

The more I read Kevn's posts the more I love my cat ... (P.S.: My cat bites me whenever he feels like it, flings litter out of the box for the humans to clean up after, wakes me in the wee morning hours just because, sheds like there's no tomorrow and tears pages out of my books. Oh, I am allergic to cats)

The problem I see is too many people want it handed to them on a platter. They don't want to give anything beyond the minimum required. And they think they deserve more than they get. A great wake-up call can be had by moving to a 3rd world country for a year or two. By the way, I love cats, with bbq sauce j/k

Things aren't really as simple as that... life's a complicated mess (unless you're ... dang... I can't think of anybody who's life isn't complicated!) You think people that work at McDonald's care about McDonald's? I hope you don't LOL it's just a job, you do it because there's no way around it but you sure as heck don't care. Why would they want to give more than is required? They're not getting more than they had before (which is already crap). Giving somebody grief over three minutes is plain and simple asshatedness (is that a word?). You don't know what that person's night was like and probably don't know much about the person in general. In the grand scheme of things, are three minutes really that important? Now, if you tell me he's 15 - 20 min late EVERYDAY... I see the point. But three lousy minutes? I'd probably snap and hit him on the head with a chair. I am not sure why you think working in a third world country would be a wake up call for anybody, but I have a sneaky suspicion that your point of view is probably black and white too. P.S.: stay away from my cat

P.S.: stay away from my cat Life really isn't that complicated. The fact is even single moms with 4 kids seem to be able to get to work on time. Why? Because they need the job. As for working at Micky-Ds, the guy who owns that place cares if the workers care. He/She is watching. The good workers move up to management, and get excellent reviews for future employment. It's like doing well in High school to get into a good college. We know that a person who isn't careful for the little things is also not careful with the bigger things. The amount of time late does matter, but a good employee is almost never late, usually that worker is early. If the worker is late there is a good reason. The good worker dresses well and has excellent manners. The reason I bring up a third world country is when you come back you will feel like a rich person working at McDonald's. P.S.: Here kitty, kitty, muhahaha

Bah, no business should be given that much power over a person's life.
All jobs are replaceable. That is something I hold dear.

Kevn's theory seems to dismiss that the only place to go from the top is down.

From: Corvus Drake .... All jobs are replaceable. That is something I hold dear. When one holds such a view it shows in ones work. The owner of the business will eventually find a good worker after weeding out the useless workers, but will the bad worker ever find a job worth keeping? Job hopping is hardly a career. The last option is being self-employed, but then one finds out why the boss was such a stickler. With the real possibility of losing money rather than standing in line for a pay check. Also some bosses end up taking home less than the employees in the beginning.

Does that mean we should strive to be on the bottom? The middle way. Or just flat out don't participate. Welcome to apathy.

Nahh. I rewrote the entire GMAC collections monitoring process for their car note collections. I was sipping from a flask while I wrote it up. Performance and customer satisfaction rose 10% or so. Wow. You really see these few roads? And workign toward a nonexistent top is a miserable concept. Enjoy life on the dogpile.

They won't kick me to the curb. I made myself indispensable. Real success in a workplace is about who you influence and manipulate, it has very little to do with job performance. In fact, often it has nothing to do with job performance. I took advantage of us not having any on-site I.T. and wrote hideously complex formulas for the database for the QA department. I removed all traces of the old system of doign it because I'm in charge of the backup tapes. They lose me and they lose the ability to observe how the agents perform. But then again, career success means absolutely nothing to me. I'm not in the industry I want, and like to score clandestine little victories for the little guy as often as I can. All employees in our offices are now permitted to wear fingernail polish, male or female, because of the uproar I started with the HR department when asked not to. I'm indespensable, pagan, have a son with extremely strong Cherokee genetics going for him from his mother, bisexual, and ordained clergy (thank you, ULC!). I'm a wrongful termination lawsuit and/or corporate subversive waiting to happen.

One massive consumer products company, one world wide pharmaceutical company and one global law firm later, I doubt I'd ever feel rich working for McDonald's here or there but I'm sure I still wouldn't care.

I'm a wrongful termination lawsuit and/or corporate subversive waiting to happen. They will catch on to you soon enough. Any company that needs one person to pull reports is lost. Eventually they will get management that will insist on written procedures for every position. I would never allow anyone to become an island unto himself. Your boss should know how to do everything you do. Or he can't supervise properly. The complexity of a formula doesn't mean it stops working when you are away. But regardless, I can't imagine GMAC allowing one person the ability to lock down reports unless he pulls them. These reports must be less valuable to them than you think, or they would secure them. In case of an accident, that person should/must have back-up. Even in a small company we know better. Everyone is cross-trained, so there are at least a few people who can do any given job.

Everyone is cross-trained, so there are at least a few people who can do any given job. I report directly to the V.P. of Operations. THere's no imaginable way that he could know inside-and-out how to work every position in the building. It's not that the procedures don't exist, I just make sure that I'm tied to processes that are new and way over the head of the higher ups (who don't care how it works, so long as it works) by taking part in their creation. I take advantage of oversights and opportunities to solidify my position to make sure certain processes follow me when I move departments and I reinvent the wheel periodically to increase productivity and my job security. I control the method through which the data is backed up, which then goes to a third party storage company. THe data itself is pulled by our tech company (GMAC has no internal I.T., instead falling back on warranties and hired tech companies). Until the data is pulled, I have absolute control of the tapes. Additionally, our tape company just went to paperless transactions and refuses to deal with anyone who was not on their authorization list. Serendipitously, that was me. And only me. I added others but they mucked it up, so I'm still the highest tier. So as it stands, regarding GMAC's Automotive Mid-risk Collections: I wrote the QA process for the span from low risk to high risk. I did so in a complex manner that has signature coding only someone who would cost more to hire to decode than it would cost to fire me could understand. I have control of the entire backup system for the office and can make anything I want disappear from our server activity. I do the job well, am well liked, and pull of all sorts of shenanigans. I've been here 3 years and this is my third management position. I was promoted within 3 months. And all of the above that seems like plotting, was really just afterthought. Most of my energy is spent on forums and coaching . The bored, intelligent, and lazy are ALWAYS more powerful than corporate America. That's why HR departments put so much effort into keeping such people happy.

It's also because he's put a lot of stock in the "the way things are" concept you're trained into in schools these days. People like him HATE people like me because they work their asses off and expect it of others, and despise people who are happier than they who accomplish more and do it without any real effort.
