I'm a Stargate die hard, both SG1 and Atlantis. I didn't consider Stargate "new" sci-fi because it's been on what? 9 seasons. Great sci-fi, for sure, but that'd have to be compared with Babylon Five, DS9 and Voyager, X-Files, etc. SG: Atlantis - you're right, I should have included that. My bad. I could have also included Andromeda, the new New Dr. Who, Adventures of Jules Verne, Earth: Final Conflict, and others, but seriously ... compared to the ones I listed ... no contest. ![]() _____________________

as much as i enjoyed Lexx, i had to go with Farscape. you can even see it's terminology pop up here and there on these very forums.. i.e., "frell", "frelling", etc..
granted, Enterprise was a great concept, but i lost interest. and Firefly was pretty cool too. i just recently started watching the series and i was impressed.. similar to Enterprise smushed together with Farscape. although, i admit, i haven't really paid much attention to Battlestar.. i think it may be too "soap opera" for my tastes. not like "The Young and The Restless" so much as, "WWE" style. ![]() but, i stnad by Farscape. it was an awesome show. i still think it's odd to have TWO characters on the Stargate series from Farscape and have them unrelated.. it would have been MUCH cooler to see them crossover each other! but, that's just a pet peeve.. SG1 is still a great show as well. so is Atlantis.. i would SO love to be on there as a Wraith! ![]() _____________________

I think it was a decision based on, "Frell! MacGuyver's off the show, what do we do? Oh, hey, the Farscape folks are looking for work ... ". I've seen successful crossover work. Detective Munch crossed from the critic-adored "Homicide: Life on the Streets" show set in Baltimore, Maryland, and sent him up to New York City to the team of "Law and Order: Special Victim's Unit". Both are great shows. Farscape is a brilliant show, love it, it's my #2, but it never wrenched my heart like Firefly did. _____________________

*snip* ..but it never wrenched my heart like Firefly did. ah.. excellent point. although, there were some heavy plot points.. such as Zahn's death. but you still make an excellent point.. the wrenching was far more frequent on Firefly. but you have to admit.. as far as villains go, Scorpius takes the cake. between those two anyway.. Lexx had both Prince and Mantird. so, you know.. ![]() _____________________

but you have to admit.. as far as villains go, Scorpius takes the cake. Yeah, for true, but it was clear that Joss was definitely ramping up for a gradual revelation of some pretty hard-core villians. Plus there was Niska, and he was a pretty badass psychopath villian. _____________________

Even tho I was hooked on the new Battlestar Galactica series and on SG1, I had to vote for Lexx. Not quite "new" but the chicks were H-O-T!!! It was such a bizarre lil' show! "The Dead do not Be-Bop-A-Loo-A"

Is Lost counted as part of the Sci-fi genre? If it is,then i would probably choose Lost aswell.Either that,or Invasion.

I don't see why Lost doesn't count as sci-fi. It's not a space opera, but it has plenty of sci-fi stuff such as "monsters" made out of smoke that can knock down trees and scan people's minds, kids with seemingly supernatural abilities, and mystical numbers.

The New Doctor Who Agreed, at least compared to the other shows listed. Even Firefly I just can't wrap my head around. Have not even seen it yet, but I have seen every one of the old episodes available, and own nearly all the original NA books. Began to lose interest in the whole Faction Paradox / Time War thing when the BBC took the books back, but I may go back to that again. It just shows that both patience and 'cautious optimism' will win out - even after two decades. _____________________

I'd say that Lost counts as Sci-Fi, it's not Horror though it may border on Fantasy. It has a solid plot, strange scientific research centers, your never quite sure if they are really on the island or if their minds are being tinkered with. I'd have to say that Lost gets my vote today.
Farscape however, was an awesome show and ranks as one of my favorites, mostly because similar to "Lost", the character development was fantastic. I only watch Invasion because it's set here in Florida and my husband HATES things with tentacles. I like to tease him about having turned into one of "THEM" during hurricane Wilma. One night I went and got a cold, gelatinous, gummy worm from the fridge and stuck it in his ear while he was sleeping and wispered "tentacles, tentacles", Muhahahaha. Freaked him out man. ![]() . _____________________

Battlestar is a fine, fine show, but I have to give the nod to Firefly; the writing was better and more varied (Whedon can juggle drama with comedy like nobody's business). Does anyone else think the smugglers in Alien Resurrection were an alpha version of the crew of the Firefly?
I enjoyed Farscape almost as much as Firefly, if for no other reason than it was so freaky. I tend to be in the minority as far as Star Trek series go. I am a Deep Space Nine fan, as it had one of the best ensemble casts of any TV series, sci-fi or not (it did suffer from the fact that the aliens were generally more interesting than the humanish leads). Other than that, give me TOS. (Sidenote: I have nicknamed Marina Sirtis' character in TNG "Counselor Cleavage" for her rather blatant costuming. Little did I know how shameless the later Star Trek series would be in creating eye candy female characters, something Deep Space Nine thankfully kept to a minimum, Dabo girls aside.) Of this season's big network scifi shows, I thought Threshold was the best and creepiest (also, Peter Dinklage rocks), so of course it was the first to be cancelled. Invasion and Surface are okay, but haven't made my Tivo season pass list. |

All the shows listed are great (except for Enterprise, which sucked royal donkey balls, but somehow I still watched it every week anyway). However, I'm a little confused over the word "new" in the title question. With the exception of BSG, all the shows listed are over and done with, long since cancelled. Those shows haven't been new in quite some time. Here are details if anyone's curious:
Farscape - Ran 1999-2003. Was new 7 years ago, and ceased being current 3 years ago. Not new now. Firefly - Ran for one season in 2002. Was new 4 years ago. Not new now. Lexx - Ran from 1997-2002. Was new 9 years ago, and ceased being current 4 years ago. Hardly new now. Enterprise - Ran from 2001-2005. Was new 4 years ago, and ceased being current over one year ago. Not new now. Battlestar Galactica - Miniseries was new in 2003. Series began in 2004 and is still current. Having begun 3 years ago, it's hard to still call it new in its own right, but since it's constantly referred to as "the new BSG" in comparison with the 1978 original, I guess it's still safe to call it new. I suppose one could argue I'm being a stickler for semantics here, but I don't really think so. I would define "new" either as starting now, or as having started very recently and still going now. Either way, it's the "now" that's important. Shows that started and ended years ago cannot be new. Now that that's out of the way, to pick which one is best from that list (old and new), I gotta go with Farscape. As I already said, Enterprise was terrible (except for some notable episodes in the final season). Lexx was wonderful for its creativity, but it was never truly great television. From day one, while it was very entertaining, it was plagued with mediocre acting and little to no compelling drama, and what good there was all went south when they went to Earth. In contrast, Farscape and Firefly were, and BSG is, truly great television at its finest. All 3 have complex characters played by superb actors, deep story lines, gifted directors, high drama, and really good effects. BSG is hands down the best show on TV right now, and Firefly was awesome, but I don't think either are quite as good Farscape. _____________________

I'd go with farscape BSG I can't waot to go off the air so it can be replaced with something I'd enjoy more - like home movies of a root canal - never been able to stomach it for more than a few minutes of it

Monsters and ghosts and supernatural stuffs aren't really sci-fi. ![]() They just aren't accepted as mainstream so the sci-fi channel picks it up. Yeah, I take your point. Although, one of the main theories floating around about the monster is nanobots, so it could be yet. _____________________
