They do it because even though he's been dead for years. they're still scared shitless of him.

LOL, well they did raise him to almost God-like status so it would be a bit hard to get away from that now.

The official Party Line of China is that there is no state religion, so official the country is atheist.

However one could make a very good argument that the State Religion is, in fact, Communism. And Chairman Mao is their prophet.

Not to be rude, but that statement is too neutral. Does that mean you think Mao was a good influence on China, or a bad one?

I can't tell, and I'm interested in knowing. :)

From the western point of view, theres a tendency to see only the worse in a person and demonize them. For example, the situation in Iraq now. While the people might be free from the tyranny of Saddam, there is no denying that the damage caused by the liberization is far more severe than it would be if the war never happened. This is the result of trying to save the few at the expense of the many.

But I am one who still think someone like Hitler did do some good and fought for what he thought was best for his homeland. Up until today tho, every one of us grew up swallowing the propaganda machine that was left behind by the victors of the second great war, so we shall leave it at that.

From what I see, every decision made by any leader is a compromise. From that, I would judge Mao based on the sum total off all the positive and negative effects he had on China. More likely, he did more good than harm, even if some people suffered in the process.

Stalin once said
"If you kill one, its a tragedy. If you kill millions, its a statistic."

Yeah, I'm sure he loved his mamma and puppy dogs, too. So that makes him all OK.

What is this "some good" you speak of? My mother grew up under his rule and she's having trouble remembering the good parts of it.

Actually, little bit of trivia here, while that is popularly attributed to Stalin there is apparently no evidence that he actually said it.

Again, not to be rude but this thread has been pretty productive so far, so can we please not derail it into a flame war about Hitler?

Maybe start a new thread to discuss if he did any good or not?

Thank you in advance for understanding.

Understood. Just something that gets my hackles up, given the family history. But I'll refrain. :)

Hey I totally understand. That comment sort of made my eyebrow raise in a "oh really?" sort of way too. By all means start another thread to talk about it, you never know it might be interesting.

Although pretty much any thread about Hitler is doomed from the start. WAY too much emotion attached to that subject for any kind of rational dialog.

This is a link to a site about the life of Mao Tse-Tung that I found interesting and thought I would share.

I'm pretty sure that the Government of China blocks access to Second Life for it's citizens, but it would be really interesting to get a view point on all this from someone that actually lives in Communist China (as I am sure that this site puts a western spin on these events).

NO! They dont!

I have been two weeks in Shanghai with my brother. We had a fast broadband and I logged on to SL without ANY problem.. and was inworld several times.. and the home page was no problem to connect to..

BUT I tryed to connect to: http://forums.secondcitizen.com/ - that one I was never connected to.. i tryed several times..

And gmail that I uses was NP to connect to... sometimes it was down (prob to many that connected to it.. ) sometimes it was fast as usual...

And yes there was some pages that had a sign on... yes we was aware of the golden shield...

A city filled with KFC, McDonalds, Starbucks,,, name it.. Armani Dolce Gabbana.. and al others.. malls.. loads of malls.. with al expensive brands.. and at expensive prices.. same as home..

...AND LOTS OF western companies make use of the low paid labour!

I was often out at clubs dancing.. meet a lot of students. and many played WOW... talked perfect English.. and was very curios about me/us - al... They loved al western things. so that town will become a Disney resort in 5-10 years.. and the normal people with normal (low) income will be kicked out to the suburbs...

/Tina

I currently live in China, the country that some people call "communist". Sofar the central government has not blocked or censored SL.

However, and this is no joke, just TODAY at midnight 31st July / 1st August the China Telecom began to block Second Life, the SL website and even the Linden Lab website. Since almost everybody in China goes through them, they effectively shut out more than a billion people from Second Life.

At ACS we immediately had to invoke our emergency plans we have for that situation. It sucked, but we have shown that we can still somehow operate even under these extreme circumstances.

If it weren't for Anshe and her good connections and lobbying groundwork that she laid for SL in China during the past couple of months, then SL would likely be dead in China now. Fortunately she managed to get them reopen access within less than a day.

Our Anshe = ROXXX

:-)))

Anshe of course fight the China bureaucracy and wins.. and yes of course al 1 (1.3) billion has a comp.. was locked out... wow..

My idea of "good" is the direct opposite of yours. So, as Vares said, we shall leave it at that.

Thats more like it! Remember, while most other animals are quickly getting extinct, humans are the most expendable mammal we have now.
