From: Cliffy Palmerstone What you are describing equates to a corrupt society. I find it very distasteful. The police officer has the legal authority to decide if a traffic ticket is warranted or not. Legally they can choose to issue a warning if they feel the person made an honest mistake and if the violation was a minor one. Otherwise the courts would be overflowing with minor "nothing" cases and the real crimes would never get prosecuted. It's called common sense, not corruption. The police do the exact same thing in your country as well.

Kind of silly to get upset about this. Yes, our country is incredibly, hopelessly, horribly corrupt, but how the police distribute tickets (other than the "speed traps" is hardly a significant part of it.

From: Dennis Bertone You don't have to be a fireman or military to get out of a ticket for going 10 MPH over the speed limit. Just be COOL to the cop, don't lie and have all your paperwork up2date. It works 90% of the time. I bet you think that in your wonderful country, this doesn't happen...LMFAO In my country 10mph over the limit is like, one step away from the slammer... I got ticketed - twice in one trip - by automated cameras located about 10km apart. My speed? 106 km/h in a 100 zone. Penalty was 2 x $135 fines and 2 demerit points. Tickets in Australia almost never come from cops these days, always the damn cameras which aren't subject to negotiation...unless you happen to have the shotgun in the trunk . O dammit no, that's right, the government outlawed most of them. EDIT: PS That was hilarious!

From: Cliffy Palmerstone So you think that corruption is acceptable? The picture you are painting of your country is not a pretty one. I would say that having humanity does not mean the same thing as being corrupt. Yeah, and no one ever lets a minor infraction get by with a wink and a nod wherever you're from, I suppose. Big... freakin... deal. Police let speeders go for all sorts of reasons. Would you be as upset if the police officer was letting a speeder off with a warning if it were a pregnant woman who said she was going to the hospital (even if she wasn't... cop doesn't have to know ) Or is your scorn just for people in the military? Curious minds want to know.

From: Cliffy Palmerstone Alternatively, it helps to be a mason. I find that equally distasteful. Sorry if you don't like that and if you think it makes me less human. *laugh* Have you ever been a Mason? My husband is. Hasn't helped him with any speeding tickets yet, however.

Curious minds want to know. You appear to have skipped much of the thread and appear to be reading a lot more into what I said than was intended. I'm not upset at all about it. I commented that a specific type of 'turning a blind eye' that Billybob was propounding struck me as distasteful. We discussed the issue and found some common ground yet disagreed about that specific point. I don't see why someone being in the military should be treated differently from anyone else. The issue about pregnant women going to a hospital is a different one altogether. I've known it happen and often the police would provide an escort (and if she was lying she would deserve it if she got fined). In truth I would be much happier if the police turned a blind eye to minor speeding offences more often, so long as it wasn't just for their friends. Your last sentence comes across as rather patronising; I don't have scorn for the military, I used to work as a civilian on a military base for 15 years and I have no issue at all with the military. My distaste is for what I described earlier as the 'old boy network.'

I disagree the best advice from Chris Rock is "Don't go to parties with metal detectors, sure it feels safe inside, but what about all those N***** waiting outside with guns? They know you ain't got one" from No Sex in the Champaigne Room
